Palm Horizon Shorts

Whilst looking around the new Palm Equipment website I spotted the Horizon shorts. They look the business and it’s great to see a boating specific short coming to the market.

Chasing the endless summer? The cool surf inspired Horizon shorts hide some clever features. The windproof shell covers a warm, comfortable fleece liner, ideal for warm or cold weather. A neoprene waistband and lace-up closure keep the shorts in place while a roomy thigh pocket holds your keys close at hand.

Kayak Video Guide – Enns Obere Kummerbrücke (Upper 600) IV-V, Ennstal, Styria, Austria

Kayak Video Guide – Enns Obere Kummerbrücke (Upper 600) IV-V, Ennstal, Styria, Austria from Absolute Outdoors Strobl on Vimeo.

ATTENTION: The “Nadelöhr” rapid, which is shown on the thumbnail picture, might have changed in a bad way after the last 2 floods. The footage on the video is around 2-3 years old. As it seems, already 2 experienced paddlers got stuck in there and one even was sucked trough a undercut somewhere. REALLY scetchy – make sure you take the left line or take really good safety preparations. Continue reading

Grab Handles and Security Bars – Testing, Testing

Grab handles and security bars are one the bits of kit on a kayak that I have in the past paid little attention to. But I have found that if the design is right they are great for carrying and rescue duties. If not they can be a nightmare.

Most manufacturers use either a metal bar or some sort of climbing tape arrangement. In all cases you should periodically check your boats outfitting to ensure that they do not have any sign of damage or excess wear. All manufacturers can supply replacement parts if required.

Shane at Liquid Logic has filmed one of his Safety/Security bars being put under extreme conditions. Well worth watching.

We recently did another Security Bar test. It’s always fun so I filmed it again. The head of the screw popped at just about the same time as the insert that the bar is attached to pulled out of the plastic.

Drones, GoPro and Kayaks

Quadrocopters and Hexacopters seem to be finding their way into the kayaking world. At a couple of hundred pounds (£) for a quadrocopter that is capable of aerial photography I think 2014 will see more and more of these things flying around our rivers.

Here is a great video of Marsh weir from Altitude 8.

Upper Palguin With Knox Hammack

Upper Palguin with Knox Hammack from Tom Simenc on Vimeo.

A year ago today I dislocated my shoulder on the Upper Palguin. Now, I’m back and got to make a fun video of Knox style the lines. I also got a little redemption for myself by running four laps on the first drop where I hurt myself. This video was filmed and edited completely with the iPhone 5S in a Lifeproof case.

Beaver Creek Falls

Beaver Creek Falls from Rogue Specimens on Vimeo.

BEAVER CREEK FALLS! This 45 foot drop located in the most NorthWest part of Oregon requires flood stage waters for it to become runnable. After the substantial amounts of snow and rain we received just days before…we decided to go check out the infamous Beaver Creek Falls. It was a…..runnable level….at best. The low water made the lip very chunky and never made for the same line twice. One ghost boat, one lost paddle, one swim, and a potential broken rib later…we were all very excited to have run this waterfall and can’t wait to go back at higher water!

Palm Snake Sling – A Closer Look

Palm Equipment have recently launched the new Snake Sling.

Palm Snake Sling - A Closer Look

The Palm Snake Sling is a 4m length of tape with sewn ends allowing the sling to be used in various different ways when you add a karabiner into the mix. What I really like is the fact that the sewn loops have been down in such a way that it is super easy to get a karabiner in/out of without high risk of snagging. I have a number of pieces of climbing kit with this setup and know that it works really well.
