This has to be one skill that all paddlers need to develop. The ability to hunker down as far as I am concerned is the ability to stay in one place for a prolonged period of time and allow time to pass by without getting bored, distracted or getting het up about it.

Hunkering Down

I’ve found myself in days gone by sat in airports waiting for transfers, sitting at a get in/out waiting for the shuttle to return. Those who I have been with and couldn’t hunker down had a pretty tough time and no doubt found that time passed really slowly.

Some find reading or listening to music helps pass the time. Others sleep or doze in/out of consciousness. I suppose I am one of the lucky ones who can think away the time. I can kind of zone out and let things just happen around me.

Top Tips For Hunkering Down:

Don’t comment on the passing of time, the more you talk about it or think about it will appear to slow time down.
Don’t complain, it makes it worse for everyone else.
Don’t constantly check your watch/clock/Facebook page/Email.
Get some sleep when and where you can. Super important on any long trip with multiple transport changes.
