When it comes to moving your seat or adjusting other parts of your kayak you need a range of tools to do the job, a kayak toolkit if you like. Most kayak manufacturers tend to use a range of screws, allen bolts and security Torx bolts to fasten the bits and bobs to your boat.
As I try quite a few new boats per month I keep a small tool kit in the car. It’s nothing fancy or expensive but is very useful to have. This was certainly the case last weekend when I found my new boat had not been put together correctly at the factory!
The kit consists of a 4mm allen key. I use the one supplied with my Wavesport Recon or one of the great allen keys made by Bondhus. This will take care of the allen bolts on all Wavesport and Dagger kayaks. When I am getting the seat position correct in my boat I also carry the 4mm allen key in my PFD. I use a size 2 cross head screwdriver as this seems to get into the tight spaces where the screws live e.g. near the cockpit.
The screws used on Jackson boats on the grab handles and on various Pyranha outfitting elements call for the use of a larger cross head screwdriver, size 3 seems to be about right.
Finally most manufacturers use torx security (Security T) bolts on the metal grab handles found on boats. T27 is the size used by most if not all manufacturers.
