We’ve had an original Petzl Vertigo here at Unsponsored HQ for a few years and have really liked it’s performance. Petzl have been on the case and have updated the Vertigo using i-beam technology. Just like the original the Petzl Vertigo has been primarily designed for ease of clipping in with the added bonus of having a locking key gate. The new construction has shaved off 2 grams.

The Vertigo wire’s key component is the wire lock fastener. The gate is opened by pulling the sprung barrel down with your fingers, so its easy and fast but much safer than a snap gate. In fact I find that I am able to open the carabiner just as easily as any non-locking carabiner I have owned.

The orange part shown in the images has been updated with a much lower profile. The old one handled well and this new version works just as well. I can’t honestly say it’s any better.

Petzl Vertigo

The Vertigo has a nice wide gate and is easy to open even with cold hands or whilst wearing gloves.

The shape of the carabiner not only allows for a nice wide gate opening it also sits really well in the hand and is super easy to operate one handed. As it has been designed for via-ferrata use you’d expect this to be the case.

The lower part of the carabiner has also been updated which allows a tape to sit far more comfortably. This can be seen in the two comparison
