Last Saturday saw the second annual British University Creek Race take place in Glen Etive. Perfect medium water levels allowed for a challenging but fun day of racing. The student race course was comprised of two runs of the middle Etive and a final lap of the Allt A’ Chaorainn. 23 students and 7 old boys took to the river with Callum Strong and Beth Morgan taking the student titles, while David Bain took the title in the old boys race. I was very lucky to get a try on Glasgow’s new whitewater course on the 22nd of January.

The design of the course is not final, plans are in place to move the blocks around to make the features as good as they can be.

What a great facility for Scottish kayaking!

Three Waves Nose Plugs/Clips

I’ve been using Smiley nose plugs for longer than I care to remember and have never moved away from them. I am a firm believer in the use of nose plugs and each of my helmets has (had) a Smiley nose plug attached and they have served me well. However that may have just changed with the arrival of these new nose plugs from Three Waves.

The one thing nobody thought to pack…board shorts! Made do with boxers instead! – Photo by Josh Cartwright.

Scotland mixed with the Earths very half-hearted attempt at spring should be cold and horrible. So it was a pretty big surprise when it turned out to be gorgeous and warm! Everyone had their drysuits and cags, but the one thing nobody remembered to pack was board shorts! Obviously, an opportunity to do a few practice laps of the course couldn’t be turned down, so Ben and I decided to go back to basics: helmet, BA, deck, and boxers. Continue reading

Falls of Lora

Unsponsored’s little brother River was at the Falls of Lora (Scotland) last week for some awesome surfing on this tidal race.

The falls are generated when the tide level in the Firth of Lorn drops below the level of the water in Loch Etive.
