Looking After Your Drysuit

It’s hit the time of year here in the UK that it is time to put the drysuit away and dig the shorts out. It’s been a long and wet winter/spring so the kit has taken a fair bit of abuse.

Looking After Your Drysuit

I’m currently the proud owner of a Palm Spark Surface Immersion suit. When I say proud I mean it. However you need to look after your gear if you want it to last as long as possible. Leaving good gear in a damp state in the back of the car or in the bottom of a gear bag is not going to help it survive.

The suit has been a superb choice and has served me well over the last year+. It’s now time to get it ready for storage.

Baggage

Having a good kit bag is pretty important to me. It keeps my wet and often dirty kit safe and secure and helps prevent kit (or the inside of my car) being damaged.

A while back I bought an NRS Bills bag, which is an awesome bit of kit. Absolutley cavernous and very well put together. However if out for a quick paddle it is probably too big.

GoPro Bag Pack – First Look

A few days ago I managed to get hold of a few GoPro bits and bobs that aren’t that widely available yet. The GoPro Caps & Door Pack was one of them. I also ordered a battery and this GoPro Bag Pack.

Peli SD Card Case

Just picked up one of the Peli 0915 memory card cases.

Case Features Include:

Water resistant seal
Stores 8 SD and 16 Mini-SD memory cards (not included)
Removable insert liner absorbs shock and protects memory cards
Made of tough Polycarbonate resin

The case is as well built as all other Peli products. Waterproof rating is IPX4 which is essentially splash proof and can hadle being out in the rain. If dropped in the water the chances are the case will leak.

GoPro Storage Case

Picked up one of these today – SP POV Carry Case for GoPro HD. It looks pretty good and fairly compact.

Peli 1120 & GoPro Kit

I have had a Peli 1120 case sitting around for a short while. I have been meaning to get it kitted out to hold a small selection of my GoPro kit.

GoPro Accessory Roll

I added a new bit of kit to my GoPro set up last weekend. I needed a system that could carry my extra GoPro kit safely in the boat but probably more importantly keeps my kit nicely organised. I don’t want to be rummaging in the bottom of a dry bag if I don’t have to. The accessory roll holds all of the bits and bobs that I need when out with my GoPro.

Accessory Roll

Two different prototypes have been made, with the main difference being the size/number of compartments. The roll shown below has been made with a ripstop Cordura so it’s really tough. It has separate compartments for –

A Phillips screwdriver
An aLOKSAK pouch containing my spare battery and SD cards. The pouch is completely waterproof.
A Gorilla-pod tripod
Assorted mounts including a new multifunctional mount that I am trying out for a new UK based firm.

The whole unit rolls up nice and tight and is fastened with a military spec fastek buckle.

NRS Bill’s Bag 3.8 – Review

I have tried a number of kit bags over the years and although they have all done a pretty good job, I have always moved on looking for something that will fully fit my needs. In short I wanted a bag that was:

– big enough to take a weekends worth of wet kayak kit and keep the inside of the car dry
– tough enough to withstand the care and attention that baggage handlers give to luggage
– easy to carry
– waterproof so that it could also be used strapped to a raft on multi day trips (you never know it might happen one day)
– not Über expensive

I had been looking at the Bill’s Bag from NRS for a number of years and never really got around to ordering one from the US. At just over £55 the 3.8 bag seemed (on paper) to meet my needs.

PeakUK Gear Bag

Getting a decent sized bag to store all of your wet kit in can be quite a task. Especially if you are working on a budget and yet don’t want to use a polythene bag! One possible option could be the PeakUK gear bag. The bags are made from two pieces of PU coated nylon so the bag is both tough and waterproof. However, the seams are not taped – therefore theoretically leakage is possible, although I have not experienced this problem (UPDATE – The new bags are now fully taped).

A single piece of webbing forms the two grab handles and wraps itself around the bag giving it full support and allows the bag to cope with wet kit without it falling apart. The top of the bag is closed via a simple cord and cord grip system. The bag is large enough to quite happily cope with a full load of winter paddling kit with room to spare. Essentially this is a very simple, functional and effective piece of kit. It does the job well, comes in a variety of funky colours, so what more could you ask. No doubt a worthwhile value for money buy, great for carrying kit and great for storing kit (I own a couple myself). Check out your local PeakUK dealer for current prices and colours.
