Found this is the archives and thought it may be of interest to some.

Inlet gate – Easy Rider

Unsponsored-teesside

A smooth surfaced green wave that can be very easy or very hard to catch depending on the rate of flow down the course. Given the correct kayak and skill you can surf all day forward/backwards, flat spin and on a good day side surf. If you do miss getting on to Easy Rider you could always pretend you were aiming for one of the smaller waves on the following wave train. It must be noted that if you know you won’t be able to catch the wave that a wave wheel is possible, but it is shallow! Continue reading

What An Afternoon

I had a great time surfing a couple of the waves today at the Tees Barrage. Low water but big smiles.

White Water & Wild Colours

I just love the combination of the vibrant colours used in kayaking and shapes/forms the water takes. I have always been into photography but I am really enjoying looking back through my kayaking images and looking for the detail in the drops of water and splashes.

Dagger Jitsu – Review

The Dagger Jitsu is the new playboat from Dagger. It’s been a long time (in my opinion) since Dagger was at the forefront of playboat design. Many of the recent designs have been popular but have never tempted me back to the brand.

Dagger Jitsu - Review

From Dagger:

Dagger brings decades of experience and team-tested, paddler-proven heritage to freestyle kayaking in the all new Jitsu Series. Tested and approved by some of the world’s most skilled paddlers, the Jitsu excels in surfing and aerial moves in wave play with volume proportions that allow skill development in hole play as well.

The Jitsu’s unique rocker profile, hull to rail relationship through the stern, carefully distributed centralized volume, and slicey tips make three dimensional combination moves in advancing hole play easier while creating a seamless blend of speed, looseness, and release on waves. The double-step carving rail above the release edge also helps the boat to grip and drive on wave faces for very controlled carving. The Jitsu maintains snappy edge-to-edge transition yet it is arguably the loosest hull on the market today.

Out-performing competitor freestyle kayaks downriver, the Jitsu is a solid all-around choice for those who want to enjoy big waves, holes on river, and freestyle competition too. Continue reading

Rapid Block Dev Day June 2013 – Tees Barrage

Today was the first development day for modification to the feature named “Happy Eater” at the Tees Barrage International White Water course. The course uses the Rapid Block system as used in the London Olympics. The blocks are bolted to the floor of the course and can be configured to create a range of features.

Before the multi million pound upgrade to the course “Happy Eater” was a breaking wave/relatively gentle stopper that was superb for flat spins and blunts. Since re-opening many paddlers have expressed that they wanted something like the old “Happy Eater” back. Thankfully support from the management team at the barrage has resulted in a a new Facebook group being created and a chance for paddlers to design the layout of the course. Continue reading

River Tees – Highest Recorded Level Paddle

After being grounded for two weeks for some appalling behaviour in Corsica, Unsponsored’s little brother River found some big water here in the UK.

River Tees – Racing Stretch

The stretch of the Tees from Egglestone to Cotherstone is known as the racing stretch due to its use as a ww racing venue. Access at Eggleston Bridge has been dodgy for some years so you are better off heading up stream to put on at Middleton. The outdoor centre at Middleton is a pefect place to get on it can found just outside of town on the road to High Force. As you leave town you’ll go over a stone bridge which has a tight left hand turn. As you head up the bank you’ll see some new houses on the left. the outdoor centre lies just beyond the houses. Don’t park in front of the house, just call into the outdoor centre and ask to leave your car. 9 times out of 10 it will be OK. A short 200m walk down a narrow footpath takes you right down to the river. Alternatively park in town and walk down to the river.

River Tees – Abbey Rapids

Abbey rapids is a popular rapid on the River Tees just downstream from the market town of Barnard Castle. The rapid has been used for many years as slalom site, but also provides a number of play spots for the freestyle paddler. The run from Barnard Castle to Whorlton Lido (grade III) holds plenty of nice little playspots as well as being a great run.

The rapid has a fairly steep gradient with number of small waves along its length. At the bottom of the run there are two large waves which can be surfed and spun on. But there is also a nice little hole which is fairly rententive and where cartwheels can be pulled. Continue reading
