Unsponsored Christmas Special 2016

Christmas day is always a big visitor day here on Unsponsored. In previous years visits go up by around 30%+. Last year was the first time I did a special post and it was very well received. I hope this post goes down at least as well and offers a little bit of escapism to those who need it.

Merry Christmas and happy New year to all. Stay safe and paddle hard!

Lucky Summer

Lucky Summer

We started our summer kayak trip in Lienz Austria, then we went to Riva falls (Italy), then Switzerland. But we were really lucky that we had a lot of rain, and the river Sorba had enough water for the Devil slide in the beginning of August!

Northern Territory – Langstrath Beck

In April 2009 Nathan Butler and Martyn Sollars embarked on journey across the United Stated of America. Nathan invested in the ‘Whitewater Classics: Fifty North American Rivers’. This book became the bible, a tick list by default – It featured handpicked paddlers sharing their experiences of each river and stating why it is a classic.

langstrath1

The book was by no means a guidebook, but suggestions made by accomplished and proven pioneers of the sport. Contributors to the Northern Territory project haven’t got the reputation or world titles as featured in ‘Whitewater Classics: Fifty North American Rivers’, but do share the same desire and passion for the sport.

Over the next few weeks Unsponsored will be sharing Nathan’s thoughts and comments on some of the many whitewater classics in Northern Britain.

From Nathan:

Although this UK Northern Territory series doesn’t cover the vast range of rivers the ‘Whitewater Classics: Fifty North American Rivers’ edition does I hope it details those that are worthy of exposure, a mixture of known classics and lesser known sections of whitewater that are carefully selected as not to dilute an abundance of excellent whitewater found in Northern Britain. We hope this works best and gives you the same excitement and is as helpful and as fun to experience as it was for us to produce.

Enjoy and Happy Hucking!

Legend of the Falls

Legend of the Falls is Corran Addisons’ DVD which aims to be “the definitive manual for anyone interested in either learning the basics of river running, or improving their creek boat skills”.

Legend of the falls proved to be a sound investment. The DVD is split into a number of chapters, they are; River Communication with Arnd Schaeftlein, River Grading, Safety, Equipment, Understanding Rapids, Running technique – boofing etc and a section titled Dr Throwline.

From the outset it is clear that this 1hr 15 Minute will have a mountain of infromation for you. It kicks off with River Communication with Arnd Schaeftlein, and wow what an eye opener. A must for all boaters of any standard. A simple and concise way of communicating on the river was effectivley described and demonstrated by Arnd – simply brilliant. River Grading was the next section with Corran describing the Addison river grading scale with clear use of words and visual examples. Continue reading
