Must have GoPro Accessories

I’ve been looking at the range of GoPro accessories I currently have to assess whether or not I would buy them again. Here is a very quick run down of the “Keepers” and the “Binned”. There has been fair bit of trial and error over the last few years but I think that I have narrowed things down to kit that works and is actually worth getting.

Most accessories will work with the entire GoPro range.

Liquidlogic Flying Squirrel – First Paddle

I was lucky enough to spend a couple of hours today paddling the new Liquidlogic Squirrel 95. Over the years I have owned a number of Liquidlogic boats including – Vision, Ronin, Biscuit, and Stomper, so was very interested to give this new #automaticforthepeople boat a try.

The boat was borrowed from Northshore Watersports based at the Tees Whitewater course which is located around 10 minutes from home. Always a good place to try out new kit as conditions remain pretty much the same (other than when major block changes have been made!).

Attentional Focus In Complex Environments

We had a great time in Scotland recently on the OC1 Creeking Course and I was reviewing the pictures today with the intention of posting a Blog. It occurred to me that some of the pictures showed an aspect of paddling we often ignore the importance of; psychological skills. As skills they are learned and take time to develop, so require some deliberate practice.

Here I will give you an example using the concept of attentional focus. If we focus all of our attention on the target attainment we are paddling to, we should be able concentrate on the outcome and use autonomous skills to achieve it. In other words if we stare at the target we seem to get there automatically without being conscious of how we did it.

Here you see a sequence of pictures that show Jan using attentional focus in a skilled way to achieve an outcome. He is paddling from the eddy between the first and second drop on Triple Falls on the Etive.

Even before he leaves the eddy he is focussed on the lip of the next waterfall where he needs to perform the boof to make a successful descent:

GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition – First Look (Part One)

A new GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition landed at Unsponsored HQ during the course of today and has just been unpacked. Other than the video upgrades there also seems to be a number of changes to unit that are not apparent when looking at the pre-release images.

In the box is the usual booklets, safety advice, skeleton backdoor, 2 x extender pieces, 1 x curved mount, 1 x flat mount, USB lead, additional QR and stickers. The notable difference between this and the GoPro 3+ is the lack of a remote fob.

The form a factor the the actual camera remains the same as the 3 and 3+ series but there have been a number of changes. Continue reading
