Sweet Rocker

I have been using a Sweet Strutter on and off for the past 10 years. The Strutter is a M/L and fits great and I have on occasion tried on M/L Rockers when in a kayak store but have always found them a little bit too snug. Last year I tried on the new “plastic” Rocker in L/XL and bought it. The best helmet will always be the one that offers you the best protection and fit.

The new Rocker is made from a plastic outer with carbon fibre re-enforment at key points. The padding is similar to that found in bicycle helmets and is covered with a lightly padded fabric cover. Self adhesive shims are supplied with the rocker so you can customise the fit. Continue reading

Wavesport Diesel

I must admit that I have largely ignored the Wavesport Diesel over the years. It hasn’t really been a boat that has made it onto my radar. Over the last few months this has changed as I have seen more and more Diesels on the water and have had an opportunity to try one out.

The Diesel from Wavesport has been around for some time but it has had a major design change over the years. The Diesel 65, 75 and 85 are generation I and the 70, 80 and 90 are generation II. Gen I models are still available but are marketed as the D65 and D75.

Surfers Ear – Exostosis

When the ear is exposed to water and cold wind over a period of time the ear canal can narrow due to bone growth, this can lead to deafness or serious infection. The only solution to the problem is surgery. I know a couple of paddlers who have had this surgery and it is not pleasant.

Many kayakers are now aware of “surfers ear” and have started to wear neoprene skullcaps to protect the ears, however surfers have found that wearing skullcaps doesn’t always prevent surfers ear. Continue reading

Paddle Plugs – I’m Plugged Are You?

Today I had impressions of my ears taken for a set of Paddleplugs. Paddleplugs are ear plugs that are custom made based upon the shape of your ear and ear canal.

The process is fairly quick and painless. My set of plugs will be made up over the next few days.

Liquid Logic Ronin 59

The Liquid Logic Vision 56 has to be one of my favourite kayaks. The next boat to find a home with me was the Liquid Logic Ronin 59. How would it compare?

Riot Dominatrix – Review

The Dominatrix is Riot’s scaled down Trickster. The Dominatrix is both shorter and has less volume than its larger sibling. This puts the Dominatrix somewhere between the Riot Disco and Trickster.

The Domiatrix is available in three sizes 41, 44, and 47.

SportPursuit – £10 Credit When You Sign Up

I was put onto these guys by my good friend Mr Higgins. Sportpursuit broker deals with top sports brands that allow the brand to sell direct to customers at stupid prices.

Wavesport Recon Core White Outfitting – Modification

A couple of weeks back I modified the outfitting system of my Wavesport Recon. The bolts that hold the thigh grips in place do not have a great deal of purchase – with only a couple of turns of thread holding the bolt in place. The condition of the brass insert in my left hand thigh brace didn’t look too healthy either.

Whitewater Troubleshooter

The Whitewater Troubleshooter series is an awesome set of videos covering a wealth of information that all paddlers would find useful. I have posted quite a lot of them previously but I thought it may be useful to gather them all in one post. I have thought about doing something similar in the past but could never hit the high quality information, instruction and production of the following.

Aquapac Whanganui

I’ve had an iPad of one sort or another for a couple of years and have always thought it would make an excellent tool for coaching kayaking. The fact you can video and then have instant play back is very appealing. Obviously the biggest issue is that water and tech don’t mix. Thankfully a Whanganui from Aquapac landed so I could test out my theory.

MYOG – Split Paddles Part I

If you ever need to call upon the set of spare (split) paddles stored in the back of your kayak the chances are that it must have got a bit fierce for you to lose/damage your normal set. If that is the case your spare set must me up to the job. Having an inferior set of spare paddles may not be the best idea. However shelling out hundreds of £’s on a fancy set of splits is quite painful on your wallet. Now and again you can find split paddles on ebay.

A couple of months ago I started a search for a suitable paddle to modify into a set of splits. The tools for the job were assembled. 1 x saw, 1 x tube clamp/cut guide, 1 x tape measure, 1 x Vernier gauge (everyone should have one these!).

MYOG - Split Paddles Part I

Today I spent a few minutes taking the care of creating my own spare set of paddles. This started by cutting a perfectly good set of Werner Wenatchee in half. The Wenatchee design is a superb symmetrical blade made by Werner in the late 90’s/early 00’s. This set cost £40 a few weeks ago.
