The British Universities Kayaking Expedition is a biennial event that sees a small had picked team of some of the UK’s finest white water paddlers organise and undertake an extended trip to a location of their choosing. Often very remote and undiscovered, there aim is to generally find new stretches of world class white water.
Previous expeditions have explored: Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia & Siberia, Vietnam, Venezuela and Ethiopia. In June 2015 a team of paddlers from British universities set off to explore the rivers of Madagascar. This is the first edit from that trip.

Earlier this year Phil Mitchell suffered a serious back injury after running a waterfall here in the UK. This short video ( Phil Mitchell – Set Backs ) shows the moment the injury occurred and the resulting road to recovery.
It also shows the importance of paddling with the right people who know what to do and when. Trust and friendship!

Over the last few years we have ran many Q&As with some of worlds top paddlers and manufacturers. This Q&A is a little bit different. David Turnbull isn’t a kayaker or canoeist. However David has been drawn towards whitewater like so many us and now spends a great deal of his time capturing the skill and beauty of whitewater kayaking and canoeing via the camera lens.
David’s photography has certainly inspire me to try a bit harder and I am very grateful that David has agreed to take part in the Unsponsored Q&A Series.
John Nestler has recently released a film about a self-supported IK (inflatable kayak) expedition down the Tatshenshini & Alsek Rivers, which flow through the Yukon, BC, and Alaska.
