Things are crazy busy at the moment and Adrian’s laptop died with the Tibet 03 project file on it. Which means it’s going to be a minute or so before we manage to get him a new one and get that edit done. In the meantime we are in Oetz, having an absouloute blast on the Upper Wellerbruecke.
Bren and Adrian headed out to Tibet earlier this year. Check out their first video instalment.
Mid-July we left towards Southern Asia and joined an international group of kayakers to go and explore the whitewater in Tibet. Being known as the roof of the world and containing the tallest mountains in the world left us to wonder what rivers must lie deep in the heart of the Himalayas.
There has been a lot of expeditioning going on in countries like Nepal or India, but there are still a lot of places, rivers, and countries which haven’t necessarily been on the list of kayaking expeditions. There have been a few trips to Tibet done by kayakers, the most famous one probably being Scott Lindgrens and Steve Fishers trip to the Tsang Po, but the eastern part still largely remains untouched, just waiting to be explored. So we followed the call and sent it to Tibet.
After spending quite a bit of time on the rivers of Nepal, India, Bhutan, Pakistan and Tibet, we asked Himalayan veteran Darren Clarkson-King for some of his top tips about kayaking in the area.
Top tips for kayaking in the Himalayas
No matter how much is planned expect things to change. Expect the bus to be delayed, the monsoon to have closed the road, your internal flight to be cancelled due to bad weather and a million more issues.
On a shorter than usual trip to Norway, Send team riders Bren Orton and Adrian Mattern decided to take smaller than usual kayaks to allow them to have a sick day on the river everyday.
The Panther section of the Kaweah, located just upstream of the Hospital Rock section is one of the best day runs in Cali. It’s about a 3 mile hike up but then once you are on the water it’s a few hours of sick boulder gardens, and tons of boofs and slides. By far one of my favorite day runs out there, and I highly recommend getting it if you ever have the chance!
One of the greatest runs in the world without a doubt is West Cherry in California. It not only has one of the most famous big slides, Graceland. But it also has so much epic whitewater and the most amazing scenery. Since Michael Ferraro and myself were going to be the first people into the ultra classic this year, we decided to do a one day. The reason being is to keep our boats lighter incase water levels were higher than we expected. Once we finally got to the river after the hike it ended up being high water, but nothing we couldn’t handle. It ended up being a huge day of hiking, kayaking, and just enjoying one of the greatest places to go with a boat.
Nouria Newman takes a run down the stunning Gorges Du Verdon.
Undeniably the most beautiful river in France. If the classic sections offer easy recreational kayaking, the canyon actually has some really good whitewater. I recommend going with someone that knows the run or take it slow since this section is full of Siphon. Thanks Max for showing me the lines !
