With the Tyne Tour coming up very shortly I thought it might be a good idea to release the next article in the student guide series. Although a student guide it is applicable to anyone who may be starting to make the move onto moving water.
From time to time this will happen and is far more common than even the great boaters like to admit. Capsizing and swimming is what helps us all get better, it’s part of the learning curve no matter what level of the sport you are currently at.
There are two main goals if you find yourself in the water. The first is to stay safe whilst in the water and second is to get out of the water. Continue reading

Kayaking Manual: The Essential Guide To All Kinds Of Kayaking is a Haynes manual written by Bill Mattos. Yes that’s right Haynes, the same Haynes that make the guides to fixing your knackered car.
I must admit that this along with the bold claim of the title made me extremely dubious about this book. The last time I had a Haynes manual was around 20 years ago for a MK II Ford Fiesta, and although great for fixing the brakes etc it wasn’t the kind of book you would read just for the hell of it.
Another great video from NRS.
Just in for review – Freestyle Kayak Moves.
This DVD shows how to do all of the ICF moves that are scored in freestyle competitions. Claire O’Hara and James Bebbington take the lead on behalf of the GB Freestyle Kayaking Team.

Some entertainment for this evening!
This has to be one skill that all paddlers need to develop. The ability to hunker down as far as I am concerned is the ability to stay in one place for a prolonged period of time and allow time to pass by without getting bored, distracted or getting het up about it.
I’ve found myself in days gone by sat in airports waiting for transfers, sitting at a get in/out waiting for the shuttle to return. Those who I have been with and couldn’t hunker down had a pretty tough time and no doubt found that time passed really slowly.
