Five Ten Canyoneer 3 – First Thoughts

Kirstie Macmillan gives us her first thoughts on the Five Ten Canyoneer 3 boots.

What Five Ten Say:

In canyoneering, where static friction is life and sliding friction death, Canyoneers have become the gold standard. The Canyoneer 3, with its Stealth S1 soles, reflects more than 15 years of R&D in some of the world’s harshest environments. The new 2015 Canyoneer retains the burly protection and excellent stability of its predecessor, but adds an increased lug height for improved penetration on soft ground and easier mud release. We’ve added welded rubber rands that interlock with the mesh upper to eliminate any chance of delamination; an asymmetric fast-lace system for single-handed adjustability in cold, wet conditions; a protective tuck-away lace pouch and svelte heel cage for torsional stiffness and support. And the flexible ankle cuff gives you support and protection without compromising range of motion.

In the past I’ve been put off the Canyoneers as they looked too chunky for fitting into a kayak or canoe, even with my incredibly small feet. I have always instead opted for Five Ten Water Tennies or some Palm booties for surfing and playboating. However, I’m now completely sold on the new more compact style and shape of the Canyoneer 3 with smaller heel and no large buckles.

So far I’ve used my Canyoneer 3s on about 6 gorge scrambles and so far, I’m delighted with their performance. The sole is absolutely bomb-proof, making your feet feel very comfortable and supported. The grip is incredible, it feels almost cruel to effortlessly step past punters who are fighting for grip in trainers and wellies! The ankle cuff is soft and supportive too but not too tight as to prevent mobility when you need to move fast.

On the Canyoneer 3, Five Ten have opted for laces, replacing the large bulky buckles. I’ve heard that other wearers have had problems with the buckles breaking in the past and the laces are a lot lower in profile.

However, the laces do open a snag hazard debate among kayakers despite the overfold at the cuff which hides the bow. It will also be interesting to see how long the laces hold up, I might start carrying some spares just in case!

The verdict so far is very positive, the Canyoneer 3s make climbing around in slippery gorges safe and easy. They are comfortable and offer a substantial grippy sole which has only failed me on green slippery slate! I plan to also use them for paddling in steep gorges or on walk-ins as the supportive design makes for comfortable hiking.

Hi Kirstie, what size would you recommend for a fellow woman with small/narrow feet? I normally wear size 6.5 US / 37 Euro / 4.5 UK. Thanks so much!
