Deep in the heart of the Rocky Mountain range lies a surf shop with long line of stories to its name. Salida Colorado houses the greatest river surfing wave in the state – but its origins begin with the birth of their whitewater park itself.
Mike Harvey is a local who came to the Arkansas River Valley to pursue whitewater rafting and kayaking back in the early 90’s.
His love for the river and pursuit of “stepping it up a notch” brought him and Zach Hughes to the pinnacle of wave creation and board shaping right on the banks of the Arkansas River.
Today the Scout Wave in Salida, along with many other features along the stretch, maintains epic space for recreational whitewater users, local surfers, and even the highly sought after trout population. Mountain Waves is an exploration and celebration of this unique sport and its impact that it’s had on this community.
