Osprey Talon 22 Rucksack – Review

I have pretty much all of the Osprey Talon range. It started with a Talon 11 that I brought in from the States before they were available here in the UK. Soon after a 33 and then a 22 joined the team.

Out of all of them the Talon 22 has been the most heavily used over recent times. Its size is great for a days walk or a winter mountain bike ride. My 22 was purchased from Cotswold Outdoor in Keswick. To be honest since getting the 22 the 33 hasn’t had a look in. I use the M/L back size and it has been adjusted via its super simple velcro adjustment system to fit my back.

I love the fact that the majority of my kit when packed within the 22 sits nice and low resulting in a low centre of gravity. The newest 22’s have a system for storing your cycle helmet and a store for your trekking poles, but mine pre-dates the tweak in design.

Within the bag I use a 3L Nalgene hydration system (Nalgene make the Osprey ones) that fits really well into the dedicated pocket. I use an Sea to summit 20L silnylon dry bag as a liner as it is a perfect fit. Stretchy side pockets/pouches usually carry my windproof and a Buff or any other kit I may need closely at hand. The pockets on the shoulder straps are perfect for snack bars or gels and the zipped waist belt pockets will happily swallow my Sony TX10 camera.

After a few years of use I haven’t found any problems with the bag and can’t think of any niggles. If I was in the market for a good day sack the 22 would still be at the top of my list.

Update: June 2014 – Purchased another 22. Newer version, in a new colour. Nothing wrong with the old one, simply offered a great deal on a nice new one.

Hi. I got the same bag as a present in size s/m and ich think its a little bit too small because the waist belt is on my belly 😀 I am 1,84m tall. Which size do you have and how tall are you?

      6ft 2″ and I always use a M/L with Osprey packs.

Has the velcro strap to adjust the shoulder harness given you any issues? Like the velcro wearing off?

None at all. It sits behind the back panel so once set (when I first bought it) it hasn’t been touched since.
