Hammocks have got to be one of the most comfortable ways of spending night out on the trail. I own a number of hammocks from the very simple to the very complex. Around a year ago I decided to make my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MYOG – Pertex Hammock<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I’m 6ft 1″ tall and decided to use 3.5m of olive green Pertex 4, (although it looks brown!). This made the Pertex Hammock 3.5m x 1.5m as a roll of cloth is usually 1.5m wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pertex<\/a> can be quite expensive, I have found eBay<\/a> to be the best place to get hold of some relatively cheaply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The pertex rectangle was hemmed on two longer sides and a channel added on each of the two shorter ends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could avoid the need for sewing by sealing all of the cut edges with a lighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polyester thread was used throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6mm Dyneema is currently being used but I have some 5mm on its way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cord was thread through each end and cinched up nice and tight, looped around and a square knot tied so it wouldn’t shift. If you do not sew the end channels a knot could be tied in the fabric itself. However it is important that the knot is tied in such a way that it doesn’t slip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short length of the same cord was attached to the hammock with a larks foot below the first bit of cord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will it hold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the wall posts of the new house are a little low, therefore the hammock is suspended much lower than I would normally have it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It holds nicely!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is super light weight and super compact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
