If that is the case your spare set must me up to the job. Having an inferior set of spare paddles may not be the best idea. However shelling out hundreds of \u00a3&#8217;s on a fancy set of splits is quite painful on your wallet. Now and again you can find split paddles on <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/710-53481-19255-0\/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5575057839&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337381801&amp;customid=&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2FCanoeing-Kayaking-%2F36121%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3Dwerner%26LH_PrefLoc%3D2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ebay<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of months ago I started a search for a <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/710-53481-19255-0\/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5575057839&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337381801&amp;customid=&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2FCanoeing-Kayaking-%2F36121%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3Dwerner%26LH_PrefLoc%3D2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suitable paddle<\/a> to modify into a set of splits. This started by cutting a perfectly good set of Werner Wenatchee in half. The Wenatchee design is a superb symmetrical blade made by Werner in the late 90&#8217;s\/early 00&#8217;s. This set cost \u00a340 a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>I want my split to be bang in the centre of the paddle shaft. The paddle shaft was measured and the centre point marked. With second hand\/used paddles make sure that you measure the shaft and not blade tip to blade tip as there may be uneven blade wear. Once happy with the measurement I then carefully started the cut making sure everything was nice and straight\/square. The carbon skypole shaft is super easy to cut so this didn&#8217;t take very long. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=vernier&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=hardware0b0-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vernier gauge<\/a> was used to measure the internal diameter of the shaft. The internal diameter of a paddle shaft on a fully assembled paddle is not know until you cut it in half. In this case it was 27mm.
