The key to getting decent shots from a GoPro when kayaking is to try to mix the angles.
A helmet mount is super useful and really gives the paddler POV but placing a camera on the front or back of a kayak can create some interesting shots.
The easiest way to mount a GoPro is to use the adhesive mounts that come with the camera. If attached to a boat correctly they won’t easily come off.

The curved one is usually best for the helmet, the flat mounts are usually best for the boat.
Some kayaks e.g. certain models of Jackson boats come with a threaded mount position on the bow of the boat.

The shot below was taken with a GoPro mounted to the front of a Wavesport Recon pointing back towards the paddler. If you mount a camera facing backwards on the rear of the boat you can get some great shots of the folks that are following you down the river.

Jackson produce a mount on a poll that hooked onto the grab handle. The Levator mount works really well, can be added to a boat really easily without any boat modifications.

This will provide an additional snagging hazard and will remove the grab handle from use but you can get some awesome images like the one below.

It is a simple concept and one that can be duplicated with a bit of DIY.

Some aluminium tubing a bit of plate, a drill and some welding was all that was need to created this bit of kit.

It worked really well but was again to fit a grab handle as the handle bolts needed to be removed, the mount fitted and then bolted back in position. It was way cheaper than the £135 Levator mount.
