The playboater troubleshooter series is quickly becoming one of the must watch range of videos on the net. I watch a great deal of kayak videos online and only a select few get posted on Unsponsored. The work that Chris Wing produces is simply A1.

Training is something I don’t mention on the site as I believe if you are out paddling then that is as far as training needs to go. However a few bits and bobs have cropped up in conversation over the last few weeks that I thought I would get onto the site.
Variety is the key. Shots from the same position of the play feature can become repetitive very quickly. If you are restricted by the location of your vantage point try holding the camera really high for the shot or drop down low. I use a Nikon d5100 which has a really useful flip screen that is ideal for unusual camera angles. It’s amazing what a difference this can make to shots of the same paddler/feature.
The Playboater Troubleshooter Series is brought to you by Wave Sport Kayaks and H2o Dreams LLC. Wave Sport athlete/instructor Chris Wing discusses opinions on the benefits of play. This new series looks to tackle the freestyle discipline in the same approach as Chris did in the Whitewater Troubleshooter series, through typical pitfalls, as well as a description of why the physics work not just how.
Repairing a paddle shaft is very similar to creating a set of split paddles. I have a pair of Werner Players that were pretty much brand new but had snapped near the right hand blade. Chris makes awesome instruction videos. This new serious sounds like it’s going to be superb.

I spotted this roofrack strap set up earlier this year. It seems like a really good way to ensure that the boat cannot slide forwards or backwards.
Swimming in white water is never easy. This video gives a really good perspective on what it can be like.

Wipe Outs
When everything goes horribly wrong and you lose control of your craft you will wipe out. Depending on the size and nature of the wave this can be very spectacular, even painful, and may well involve lots of unintentional capsizes and cartwheels. If you don’t bail out of your boat, you’ll find your self being pushed sideways and bounced in towards the beach. This motion is known as the bongo slide, and mastering this skill is the first step towards feeling truly comfortable in the surf. Continue reading
