GoPro Hero 3 – Freeze, Crashing Problem

I own a couple of GoPro Hero 3’s including Black and Silver editions. All have been updated with the latest firmware. I always format the card and take one photo before using auto update on the GoPro support site. Not following the instructions to the letter can lead to your GoPro not being updated correctly/fully.

I have never had an issue with the Hero 3 crashing or freezing. However when I owned a Hero 2 it did crash or freeze every so often. I managed to work out through a little trial and error that the SD card was to blame. There are loads of dodgy/fake SD cards out there and I had managed to pick one up. Since then I have bought my cards from only a few select online suppliers.

All of my cards are Class 10 Sandisk cards and I am currently running a range of Samsung Pro and Sandisk Extreme cards. My thoughts on the best Micro SD cards for the GoPro series of cameras can be found here – What SD Card For My GoPro?

I have swapped out the OEM battery for a Wasabi version which has a little more run time in both of my cameras.

    GoPro have released a new firmware this month (April 2013), and I haven’t had a problem since upgrading to it.

    Sandisk recently admitted they had a manufacturing problem with their class 10 cards, which could cause crashing on GoPro’s.

      Never had an issue with my Sandisks. Did have an issue with a Transend and PNY class 10 cards.

      Some of my mates are running Samsung Extreme speed cards without issue.

    Hey,
    since you have been using all GoPro-generations, would you recomend the Hero3? I am currently still using the Hero 1 and am thinking about updating, but I have heard much criticism considering the newes generation(s)…
    I would hate to spend 300$ and have the battery be drained after 2h or the camera constantly freezing/crashing, or whatever the further issues are…

      Never had an issue with mine. I would recommend the Silver, good images and not bad battery life.

    HERO3: Black Edition & HERO3+ Black Edition Cameras

    Not all Class 10 microSD cards have the same data write speeds. If you plan to shoot in 4k, 2.7k, or Protune video modes with your HERO3: Black Edition or HERO3+ Black Edition camera, GoPro recommend using one of the following microSD cards for the best performance:

    Lexar 32GB SDHC 600x (LSDMI32GBSBNA600R)

    With the camera software update released July 29, 2013, using other microSD cards with your HERO3: Black Edition camera while shooting in 4K, 2.7K and Protune video modes may result in a reduction of the data stream rate from 45Mb/sec to 35Mb/sec. There are a great deal of fake SD cards out in circulation and it is important that you buy yours from a reputable supplier.
