Dagger Axiom 9.0 Vs 8.5

I’ve been paddling the Axiom 8.5 for some time now and, being at the top of its weight range (I’m 185lb dry weight) and at the limit of its internal dimensions (6’4″ with size 15 feet), I wondered how the 9.0 would feel for me. After paddling both for a few months, I can share my impressions, in case someone else would be trying to make a similar choice.

Mamba, Recon, Stomper, Karma

Over the last month or so I have had around 30 emails asking if I could do I little comparison between these boats.

Having paddled the Liquid Logic Stomper, Wavesport Recon, Dagger Mamba and Jackson Karma over recent months I thought it would be quite good to gather a few statistics and thoughts in one place.

2013 Dagger Mamba – First Paddle

The Mamba from Dagger has been around since 2005 and has become a firm favourite with paddlers at all levels. Over the last couple of years Dagger’s designers and test paddlers have been working on making the Mamba even better, the result has been some major design changes that have brought the Mamba bang up to date. In many senses the 2013 Mamba is a completely new boat.

Dagger Kingpin – Review

I haven’t really seriously paddled a Dagger kayak since I owned a Vertigo years back. At the time I was pretty happy with the outfitting although I did change the back band. I was therefore very interested in giving the Kingpin a go to see how things had developed over the years.

Dagger Kingpin – Review

The Kingpin comes in the now traditional three different sizes. I managed to get hold of a Kingpin 6.3 for a few days at the end of the summer. I was fairly limited on where to paddle it due to the lack of rain but did get to spend several hours throwing the boat around at a local P&P spot.

Dagger G Ride – Review

Dagger’s G-Ride, is radically short yet it still offers comfort for a wide variety of sized paddlers due to its foot and knee contours. The G-Ride is outfitted with Dagger’s familiar Clutch™ outfitting.

Dagger G Ride - Review

The Clutch™ Outfitting includes: Hip pads and shims, seat wedge, thigh booster, and a full plate footrest. For different size paddlers, Dagger’s Clutch™ Outfitting allows for a custom fit in the boat. It seems quite effective and reports from paddlers asked confirms this. That being said I prefer solid hip pads made of foam and would remove the “pump-up” hip-pads if I owned a Dagger boat.
