Way back in 2007 we started the Unsponsored Q&A series and for 2026 it is back.

First up is Alex Littlechild.

Alex is a full-time whitewater kayak coach and waterfall enthusuiast. Alex travels the world finding the best water with the biggest drops.

We are stoked that Alex has kindly agreed to take part in the Q&A series.

Enjoy!

Could you tell us a little bit about you and your paddling journey?

I started kayaking on the Thames near to where I grew up and found every way possible to mimic waterfall kayaking from falling off of locks and jetties to visualising moves from Vimeo. Since then I’ve been turning seal launching into real waterfall kayaking and chasing my passion around the world.

Where are you from and where do you live?

I’m from London and I live out of my dry bag!

What does a regular week at this time of the year look like?

Currently in reset mode between trips. I’m seeing friends and family and getting in some UK classics.

What did you focus on to become comfortable running big or complex rapids? What allowed you to progress your skills?

Repetition has been the key to consistency for me.

Repeating movement in safer environments allows you to be purposeful and collected when it gets stout.

Do you have any pre-paddling rituals to help calm your nerves or get you into the zone?

I love listening to music before and sometimes during kayaking. Drum and bass goes a long way to get the hype going.

When was your last swim?

My last swim was at work for NZWA out of a tandem on the Kaituna. I swam before the client 😉

What has been your luckiest escape?

I was lucky to escape being born into a time without kayaking, that would have sucked.

Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world to paddle?

Always wanted to go out to the Mekong, that place looks incredible!

If you could put a team together for a multi day first descent, who would make the team and why?

Rhys Thompson and Heath Garret would have to be the combo. Two of my favourite people to kayak with, and inspirations to me in their own ways.

What message or top tip would you give to a young paddler who wants to progress in the sport?

Keep dreaming it into reality. Even the smallest seal launch can feel like a 50fter with enough imagination, use what you have when you can and stay stoked.

What paddling gear are you currently using?

I love my Pyranha ReactR Medium for its agility and yet support in the stouts. I use River Sync paddles and NRS equipment for all of my dry wear and PFD. Couldn’t ask for a better set

Many thanks Alex.

If you are on Instagram check out Alex @notsolittlechild and give him a follow.

And stay tuned for the next Q&A.
