Getting The Shot

Variety is the key. Shots from the same position of the play feature can become repetitive very quickly. If you are restricted by the location of your vantage point try holding the camera really high for the shot or drop down low. I use a Nikon d5100 which has a really useful flip screen that is ideal for unusual camera angles. It’s amazing what a difference this can make to shots of the same paddler/feature.

Astral YTV PFD – First Look

Although not available in Europe I managed to get hold of the new Astral YTV PFD for review.

As yet it hasn’t been used in anger but first impressions are pretty good. Super light and super slim (unlike the model).

Astral Green Jacket 2013 – Review

It’s been a long time since I have had a new Astral PFD.

There was something that I really didn’t like about the previous version. For me the fit was just not quite right, I know that lots of people really liked them but the design was not right for me. Roll on a few years and we have the 2013 Greenjacket.

Life On The (Throw) Line

After a couple of hours of paddling today I spied my HF Weasel Throwbag in the back of the car and had an idea. What if I attached my GoPro to the bag, what kind of footage could I get?

So…one Mount Star mount and a couple of zip ties later:

Buying 2nd Hand Kayaks/Canoes – Buyers Guide

With the RRP of most whitewater kayaks hitting the dizzy heights of £900-£1000 buying second hand has a great deal of appeal. There are hundreds of unsused boats out there lurking at the bottom of gardens or getting in the way in garages.

You can find adverts for 2nd hand boats listed on Kayak/Canoe Forums, Facebook groups and of course sites like ebay. If you can it is always best to see the boat in person as you will potentially be buying something that will cost 100s of pounds and will need to take you safely down whitewater.

I am going to give a quick run down of what to look out for if you decide to go down the 2nd hand route. I’m also going to focus on the plastic kayaks that the vast majority of paddlers use.

Dagger Jitsu – Review

The Dagger Jitsu is the new playboat from Dagger. It’s been a long time (in my opinion) since Dagger was at the forefront of playboat design. Many of the recent designs have been popular but have never tempted me back to the brand.

Dagger Jitsu - Review

From Dagger:

Dagger brings decades of experience and team-tested, paddler-proven heritage to freestyle kayaking in the all new Jitsu Series. Tested and approved by some of the world’s most skilled paddlers, the Jitsu excels in surfing and aerial moves in wave play with volume proportions that allow skill development in hole play as well.

The Jitsu’s unique rocker profile, hull to rail relationship through the stern, carefully distributed centralized volume, and slicey tips make three dimensional combination moves in advancing hole play easier while creating a seamless blend of speed, looseness, and release on waves. The double-step carving rail above the release edge also helps the boat to grip and drive on wave faces for very controlled carving. The Jitsu maintains snappy edge-to-edge transition yet it is arguably the loosest hull on the market today.

Out-performing competitor freestyle kayaks downriver, the Jitsu is a solid all-around choice for those who want to enjoy big waves, holes on river, and freestyle competition too. Continue reading

Prototype Palm FX PFD?

Below are a few shots of what must be a prototype Palm FX PFD. The front of the PFD looks the same as the production models with the exception of the zip pull running in the opposite direction.

The straps (other than colour) look just the same as the production models. Continue reading
