Mamba, Recon, Stomper, Karma

Over the last month or so I have had around 30 emails asking if I could do I little comparison between these boats.

Having paddled the Liquid Logic Stomper, Wavesport Recon, Dagger Mamba and Jackson Karma over recent months I thought it would be quite good to gather a few statistics and thoughts in one place.

Mount Star GoPro Mounts

Using a GoPro can mean that your camera angles are pretty much the same – from the helmet or from your boat. Sometimes the best shots are those that rely on the camera being on the bank, on a bridge or on a paddle. But at the same time you don’t want to be hauling a great pile of kit that takes ages to set up. In my boat a carry a small GoPro roll bag that contains a few bits and bobs for my GoPro while I am on the river. This includes spare cards, battery and a gorilla pod. Small tripods are super useful but you need a way of attaching your GoPro camera to them.

GoPro Hero 3 – Freeze, Crashing Problem

I own a couple of GoPro Hero 3’s including Black and Silver editions. All have been updated with the latest firmware. I always format the card and take one photo before using auto update on the GoPro support site. Not following the instructions to the letter can lead to your GoPro not being updated correctly/fully.

Jackson Karma (Large) – First Paddle

Today I spend a few hours in the new Jackson Karma. Now today was quite unusual as once I was in the Karma and on the water I took an instant dislike to it!

Karma (Large)

Length: 270cm
Width: 71cm
Weight: 22.7kg
Volume: 390L
Paddler Weight: Range 83-136kg

The large Karma was supplied by Northshore Watersports here in the UK. On picking up the boat I noticed it was pretty light. This was a surprise given the fact that it looks really really big. I was expecting something more akin to the Dagger Mamba and Wavesport Recon but the Karma was noticeably lighter. Continue reading

Black Rapid RS-Sport 2 Camera Strap

I have had various SLR cameras over the years and have always used them on or close to the water. The standard straps provide with them have never been great. I have never liked wearing the strap around my neck and have always ended up wrapping the strap around my wrist/arm a few times to keep the camera safe. Thinking back the camera was never really secure, but I have been lucky and have never dropped a camera in the water or on the ground.

As I have been doing more photography lately the strap situation was becoming more of an issue. After looking around for a while I found the Black Rapid Sport camera strap. The system is similar to the type of straps the military are now using for rifle slings. That in itself was a good reason to check the Black Rapid Sport 2 out.

Astral Green Jacket 2013 – First Look

I was never really a big fan of the previous Astral Green Jacket. I loved the features and the design but it simply didn’t fit me very well.

For 2013 the Astral Green Jacket has been tweaked and I had the chance to check out its new features and try it in the dry. Therefore I am unable to comment of what it is like to swim/paddle wearing the Green Jacket at this stage. UPDATE: Full review here.
