GoPro (Hero14 Black) – Mission Series

The GoPro Hero 14 Black is finally here, well kind of. GoPro have retired the Hero series and have announced the new Mission series.

After creating the market demand GoPro have begun to fall behind in the POV camera market. GoPro have been up against some stiff competition from Insta360, DJI and others.

The 2026 lineup features three distinct models:

  1. Mission 1 Pro: The flagship fixed-lens powerhouse (Releasing first).
  2. Mission 1: The standard high-performance model.
  3. Mission 1 ILS: A revolutionary interchangeable lens system using the micro four thirds format.

For years, the community has asked for a larger sensor, and GoPro has finally delivered. All three Mission 1 cameras feature a 1-inch sensor, promising a massive leap in dynamic range and low-light performance.

Despite the “premium” shift, the rugged DNA remains.

  • Mounting: Features the classic fold-out fingers, magnetic clips, and a standard 1/4″ screw mount.
  • Waterproofing: The Mission 1 Pro is rated for 20 meters. While the chassis can survive deeper, water pressure begins to interfere with button functionality beyond that depth.
  • Interface: A completely redesigned, more responsive UI replaces the aging HERO menu system.

This means that all your GoPro mounts will still fit this range of cameras.

The Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro are probably the closest to the Hero series but with a significantly updated spec.

The Mission 1 ILS (Interchangeable Lens System) is perhaps the most intriguing addition as this marks a major departure from GoPro’s action camera origins.

Utilising a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount, it allows creators to use professional glass on a rugged GoPro body. This also means that the camera is no longer suitable for underwater use without additional protection or a housing of some sort.

  • Manual Focus Only: The Mission 1 ILS does not feature autofocus. While this may be a hurdle for some, it positions the camera as a serious tool for cinematographers and high-end shots in professional film sets.
  • Crop Factor: Due to the 1-inch sensor, there is a roughly 2.7x crop factor, meaning ultra-wide shots will require specialised glass.

How do these compare to the Hero 13?

While the HERO 13 was criticised for being an incremental update, the Mission 1 series represents a complete overhaul. Here is how the Mission 1 compares to the legacy HERO series:

Sensor

  • HERO Series (11-13): Used a 1/1.9-inch sensor.
  • Mission 1 Series: Features a Type 1 (1-inch) sensor.
  • Impact: The Mission 1 has nearly 4× the surface area of the HERO 11/12/13 sensors. This results in significantly better low-light performance, less noise, and a more natural “cinematic” background blur (bokeh) that the HERO line could only achieve via software.

Resolution and Power

  • HERO 13: Maxed out at 5.3K at 60fps.
  • Mission 1 Pro: Hits 8K at 60fps and 4K at 240fps.
  • The GP3 Chip: The Mission 1 uses the new GP3 processor, which offers over 2× the pixel processing power of the GP2 chip found in HERO 10 through 13.
  • Dynamic Range: Up to 14 stops.

Thermal Performance and Overheating

One of the biggest complaints about the HERO series was overheating during long 4K takes.

  • HERO 13: Typically overheated after ~25–30 minutes of 4K/60 recording.
  • Mission 1: GoPro claims over 90 minutes of 8K recording, as long as 5 hours at 1080p30  and over 3 hours of 4K recording without thermal shutdown. This is thanks to the more efficient 5nm architecture of the GP3 chip and the new Enduro 2 battery.

Weight

Weight is big consideration when looking mounting a camera on a helmet. The Mission Pro1 1 weighs in at 207g that is about 48g heavier than the Hero13 Black (159g).

Memory

Although memory hasn’t been talked about in the pre-release material the small form factor of the camera unit would suggest that the Micro SD memory card format is the one that will be used. Check out our memory card guide here.

The Verdict: If you are still using a HERO camera, the Mission 1 Pro isn’t just an “upgrade”—it’s a move into an entirely different class of image quality.

Are you planning to stick with the rugged fixed-lens Pro model, or does the interchangeable lens (ILS) version appeal more to your shooting style?

Pre-orders are set to open on May 21 and shipping to start to begin May 28. for the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro. It is expected that the GoPro Mission 1 ILS will be available in the third quarter of 2026.

Pricing has not been announced.
