I have had an idea for a similar system, but on a static roller using a shaped cam to simulate the way a boats secondary stability point kicks in. They might be better off in this instance having the paddle suspended on a spring tensioned wire. This would allow the paddle to sink straight down if they relied on pulling down on the paddle, but would offer some simulated water support if used correctly.
