Dirty First Aid Series – Part 2

In this series I am pleased to offer a ‘dirty’ First Aid approach. This is suited to kayakers and river users. Using a ‘find it fix it’ approach to incident care and management.

Dirty First Aid - The Series

In our last article we looked at the Primary Assessment of a casualty. Now we move forward to a secondary assessment – here we deal direct with an injury or medical condition.

We will under take a full head to toe exam. Time to take a SAMPLE and deal with obvious injuries. Lets not rush at it – it needs to be spot on.

S – Signs and symptoms
A – Allergies
M – Medications
P – Previous medical issues
L – Last meal
E – Events

This sample is simple, we find it we fix it.

Dirty First Aid Series – Part I

We all love to kayak, sure. It has some things we love and some we hate. First Aid often becomes the elephant in the room.

When was the last time you or your peers did a course or a workshop? Do you keep ‘up to speed’ on developments?

In this series I am pleased to offer a ‘dirty’ First Aid approach. This is suited to kayakers and river users. Using a ‘find it fix it’ approach to incident care and management.

Dirty First Aid Series – Part I

This first article will lay the foundations of rapid emergency aid. It’s a simple approach that a basic personal First Aid kit and things carried on you can deal with. Now is not the time to discuss what you should or should not carry in your kit. Read the series and make your own mind up.

Zet Toro – First Impressions

Nick Pearce gives us his initial thoughts on the new Zet Toro.

Earlier this week I was lucky enough for my new Toro to arrive in Voss. Now the days here are getting very short and there is a good layer of snow up high, winter is defiantly just around the corner. And It will be time for skiing. But not quite yet so yesterday we got on the Raundalselvi and I was able to put the Toro though it’s paces.

First impressions, it’s simply amazing but here is a bit of a break down on the boat.

Liquidlogic Mullet Pre Production

Some time ago we showed a few images of a new kayak now known to be the Liquidlogic Mullet.

Pyranha 9R Large – Review

I was hooked up with a pre-production prototype of the new large Pyranha 9R a few months ago. The boat is essentially the same as the production model with the exception of some of the Connect outfitting. The boat has been paddled extensively since that time so it is now time for a full Unsponsored review.

Now if you were to sit this 9R large (9R L) next to the already released model it would be very clear that the 9R L isn’t simply a scaled up version of its little brother. Almost every area of the hull has been changed in some way yet they still have stayed true to the purpose of the boat, i.e. a fast fun boat that sits under the magic 9ft length.

Pyranha 9R Large - First Look

Pyranha have spent a fair bit of time looking at the performance of the smaller model and have significantly changed the profile of the kayak in a number of key areas to produce this version.

Spade Kayaks – 2016

Team Unsponsored is at this year’s Paddle Expo and I personally wanted to catch up with the team behind Spade Kayaks to find out what is going to be new as we moved forward into 2016.

Over the last few weeks a few images of a “new” Ace of Spades have emerged and after a really good chat with the guys from Spade Kayaks I have the full detail.

Spade Kayaks - 2016

Firstly the Ace of Spades for 2016 has the same hull shape as the kayak we reviewed on Unsponsored earlier this year.

Ace Of Spades – Review

We are fortunate at Unsponsored to try some of the best kayaking and canoeing equipment available, but sometimes the weather can be too dry. Thankfully the Gods of rain smiled on the UK once again this summer, so testing and reviews have continued at a pace. The following review looks at the Ace of Spades kayak from Spade Kayaks. The boat has been tested over the last few months across the UK on various pieces of water from stone filled ditches, low volume/high volume burns in Scotland, some of the best whitewater in the glorious county of Yorkshire, whitewater parks and even out at sea.

Spade kayaks is a new kayak company formed in Europe by whitewater legends Hans Mayer, Oli Grau, Matze Brutzman, Jens Klatt, and Jan Haluszka.

The Ace of Spades is a blown molded displacement hull kayak. It has the features that you would expect to see in any whitewater boat – adjustable outfitting, full plate footrest, multiple grab handles, drain bung etc… but many have been executed in a creative/different way.

The Ace is designed as a river runner/creeker and is available in just the one size.
