Shoulder Injury Survey – Results

Back in 2016 we shared John Nestler’s request for information relating to shoulder injuries suffered by paddlers and whether or not the paddles used (bent or straight shaft) made a significant difference. Two years on and John has kindly shared the data.

Shoulder Injuries Study - Bent Vs Straight Shaft

Back in 2016 I released a survey on my website looking at a number of different factors surrounding shoulder injuries in whitewater kayakers. The original intent was to simply see if injury rates differed among boaters using straight shaft or bentshaft paddles, but the scope quickly grew beyond that. Thanks to all of you that did the survey back then – over 2,700 people responded!

I’ve been sitting on this data for two years now and just don’t have the time to do a thorough statistical analysis, so I’m putting it out here into the community.

It’s interesting to read the comments made by respondents to get their analysis of what caused the injury, and steps they’ve taken to prevent those injuries from reoccurring.

Earlier this year Phil Mitchell suffered a serious back injury after running a waterfall here in the UK. This short video ( Phil Mitchell – Set Backs ) shows the moment the injury occurred and the resulting road to recovery.

It also shows the importance of paddling with the right people who know what to do and when. Trust and friendship!

Simply inspirational.

A Winter Of Rehab And Recovery

This is a very personal account of the last 6 months and my time spent recovering from injury. It features a few dark moments before the positive outcomes so please bare with it…

This winter has been pretty tough with very limited amounts of kayaking. Back in September I dislocated my ankle wake boarding breaking both my Tibia and Fibular. As a result I was in hospital for 5 nights requiring extensive surgery to fix my ankle back together.

When you have a major injury, whilst it’s extremely painful, you do not think of the pain. As soon as it happened straight away I knew I was going to be off the water for a long time, and that feeling is a lot worse than any pain, and don’t get me wrong the pain is massive!

In hospital you are dosed up on pain killers and put in a ward with other sick and injured patients. You are left waiting for when you will go in to surgery with little knowledge whether it will be a few hours or a few days.
