To Cobra Flip Or Not To Cobra Flip

To Cobra Flip Or Not To Cobra Flip
To Cobra Flip Or Not To Cobra Flip

Although the falls at Rock Island run often in the winter and spring, it’s rare to get the chance in the summer. Luckily due to some issues with the generators they released some water out of the dam, bringing in the spout line and sieve city. It was on the low end, but it was at a level we essentially never see! We knew it was gonna be runnable, but what tricks to throw was the question.

Astral Green Jacket Vs Kokatat Hustle R

From L to R:
Astral Green Jacket, Palm Nevis, Kokatat Hustle R, and Yak Taurus PFD

When I’m at paddling events or on a river when I meet other paddlers it is pretty much guaranteed that someone will be wearing an Astral Green Jacket. After all it is a stand out design that works really well. However I have recently picked up a Kokatat Hustle R and wanted to take the opportunity of comparing the two in a little more detail.

The Astral Green Jacket and Kokatat Hustle R I have here are EU versions. For the European market the Green Jacket has a side entry feature where as the US version does not. The Kokatat Hustle R has some additional reflective SOLAS tape on the shoulder straps to meet newer ISO requirements in the EU.

First Run In The Antix 2.0

Towards the end of May the Antix 2.0 mold finally arrived, and right as we were able to get the first boats out of the mold to paddle, some rain hit and we were able to get a low water lap on the Caney Fork. Despite the lower water, the Antix 2.0 made the run just as fun as always, and can’t wait to get back on there with some juice!

Have I Gone Completely Mad-River?

I thought some of you might be interested in my Mad River Explorer RX16 with iq2 gunwales as the boat is often complimented on and questions asked about its additions.I purchased the canoe around 6 years ago and it came with a bonanza of kit along with a host of IQ2 outfitting accessories which I have slowly been adding to, not easy in the UK when IQ2 kit is no longer being manufactured and most these rare extras are seldom found outside of the USA.

Kokatat Huck Throw Bag – First Look

We first made a post about Kokatat releasing a new throw bag way back in 2019. It has only been quite recently that the Huck began to appear in stores.

Spade Kayaks New Boats

It looks like a number of new boats are about to land looking at a post made by Spade Kayaks today.

In the shot is the slicey Joker (top), Royal Flush, Black Jack and Queen (bottom).

The Joker is new and the Queen (Queen of Hearts) has new graphics. Possibly even a 2.0 update.

The original Antix was already my favorite boat of all time, but this boat blows it out of the water. It’s the perfect combo of all the playfulness I could ask for, but still gives me confidence that I am going to be able to run some much harder whitewater with this thing. More rocker, planing hull, faster, easier to paddle, this thing is insane. I am so fired up on how it turned out, and can’t wait to get it on all of my favorite sections!

El Rio Claro

El Rio Claro
El Rio Claro

Outside of Molina, Chile, lies one of the most incredible places to experience. The rio Claro is a river that you can only truly appreciate its glory, and many sections are only possible to access, by kayaking it. It is about as narrow, and committing as kayaking gets. It is one of my favorite runs in the world, and by far one of the most beautiful. The chrystal clear water, the towering overhanging walls of the gorge, and the endless drops. It is a place like one other, and I am always counting down the days till I can drop back in.
