iPhone and Kayaking

After work this AM I called in at the Tees Barrage as I knew that a number of the River Militia boys would be on the water. Unfortunately the battery in my Lumix GX1
was dead, so I turned to my iPhone. The still image and video quality from the 4s turned out to be pretty good.

The Tees, Tubes, Tears and Tissue Damage

Had a great day on the Tees with the boys trying out some tubes on dog leg. Waters levels were pretty good at 0.59 on the gauge. The day before the water had been very high.

Tees Barrage – Happy Eater 17th May 2012

Last night a merry band of paddlers spent a few hours at the Tees Barrage International White Water Course moving some blocks on the long course. After a few sessions making adjustments to the Rapid Blocks on the short course it was great to get the OK to take a look at the main part of the course.

We based ourselves at Happy Eater with the aim of creating a good all round play feature. We started by removing all of the blocks that had been in place pretty much since the course was back in action. Putting the water on full flow showed some interesting results. Continue reading

Cauldron Snout – The Stout of the Snout

The Stout of the Snout

Sam Ellis styles it down Cauldrons Snout. A class V+ stretch of whitewater on the River Tees (UK).

Sam Ellis running the Cauldron Snout on the River Tees. You can count on one hand how many times this section has been successfully run. But this is the first time it has been ran with a substantial amount of water. The river was at approximately 0.7 on the nearest river level gauge.

Cauldron Snout is 180m long and is recognised as Englands longest waterfall which looses 61m giving it a gradient of 34 percent. Sit back watch and enjoy!

River Tees- High to Low Force

This has to be one on the classic all year runs in the UK. This section may be short but can be ran at most times times of the year.

The get in is at the High Force Hotel where there is ample parking. A small fee will get you parking and access to the water. The river can be reached by walking a few yards east from the hotel where a footpath leads you down the valley to a large grassed area some two hundred yards down stream of high force itself.

From here the river bimbles down through some grade II/III rapids before reaching Salmon Leap (aka Dog Leg) falls. In each case the line is easy to work out. If needed a path runs down the whole length of the run (river right) which is great for inspection or another sneaky go of the last rapid! Continue reading

Tees Today

River Tees – High to Low Force

Today has a number of firsts. My first time in my Liquid Logic Stomper, my first time paddling with a Uni club (many thanks Teesside Uni) and my first swim on the Tees!

When I left home this morning Rainchasers.com was indicating that the level was a low 0.71 on the gauge. In reality this is probably a medium level.

Here are a few images from the day.
