Mill creek and Manns creek are two Fayetteville staple runs. Both super fun, clean and quality. Mill is a steep whitewater carnival ride, but remember it’s still class 4-5 so bring your balls. Manns creek is a boofing paradise. Its seems to be five miles of a boulder garden almost non-stop. Both of these amazing runs are with 30 minutes of town. Add a dries surf session in there and I don’t know how it could get much better…. as far as whitewater goes anyway!

The Power of the Merino

Since buying a couple of merino tops a few months back I am completely sold on the stuff. For years I had been using Helly Hanson Lifa or Sub Zero Factor 1 thermals. All of which developed that characteristic kayaking odor.

The Power of the Merino

My current kayak thermal of choice is the Howies merino surf thermal. The merino is thin, the arms are nice and long and also include thumb loops. These are superb when your putting on your drycag or dry suit as they help prevent the sleeves rolling up. The neck is a turle neck so you get a bit of protection from latex dry cag seals. I managed to pick up two of these thermals before they stopped producing them, one of which was found new on ebay. They do come up now and again. The NBL or NBL Light are probably the closest match and are in the current range (I own a couple of these as well).

Waterfalling: New Lines, Good Times, and Scary Eddy!

Waterfalling: New Lines, Good Times, and Scary Eddy! from OGP Productions on Vimeo.

Check out my 5th run on my favorite waterfall ever!!! Tried a new line and ran/seal launched the dam above it for the first time and caught an interesting eddy! Right, to eddy, to left!!!!! Took a hit to the face, and ended up with some stitches above my eye, but all good besides that! Reminder that sometimes big and clean can be hard and mean! Stoked for a season in the South East again this year, and more fired up on kayaking than ever!!!!!

Caring For Your Kit – Part III

Keeping on top of kit repairs is pretty straight forward and a little bit of TLC could prevent the damage getting worse.

Holes in most stuff can be repaired with Stormseal which is a clear flexible glue. I’d avoid the larger tubes as this stuff will go-off once opened. Keeping it in the fridge will help but you can get packs of 3 x 5g tubes which are superb.

I few mates of mine have also had good success using the Stormseal instant patches to repair dry tops. For breathable fabric McNett patches may be worth considering.

Stormseal will work great on most things including neoprene but I have found that black witch works even better on wetsuits and decks.

Once in a while your kit gets to a point where it is no longer safe to use or it simply doesn’t do its job as well as it should. When it does it is time to get rid.

Choosing A Paddle

You would think that choosing a paddle would be fairly straight forward. All paddles look the same and after all perform the same function. The difficulty lies in the huge range of paddles available. Walk into any kayak store and you will be presented with a wide array of what appears on the surface the same bit of kit.

Shaft options:

Shafts are available in lots of different materials and each has there own set of advantages and disadvantages. At the cheaper end if the market is the aluminium shafted paddle. They can feel cold to the touch and often have some form of insulation or covering in the areas that they make contact with your hands. The shaft in such paddles will also probably be straight.

The benefits of a straight shaft is that they have a familiar feel and are cheaper to produce than their cranked cousins.

Great Falls

Great Falls from Dirtbag Media Van on Vimeo.

Just a short drive outside of Washington D.C lies Great Falls of the Potomac, one of the most unique, classic, and accessible class V runs in the world. Because the Potomac is such a large volume river and the falls themselves branch off into so many different channels and mini gorges there is always something to be run year round. Whether it’s low volume creeking, slalom, playboating, or shit your pants big water, that you crave. The Potomac has your fix!

Feel free to ask about levels and lines! Continue reading

Let Everything Go

Let Everything Go from D Bryant on Vimeo.

That sensation, that thrill you feel when about to go over the edge. A sensation sought and found by a select few, who scale the vast and turbulent waters of the world in tiny boats, at one with the rivers they travel, being able to see a version of the water that the rest of us never can.

I am not a kayaker, by any stretch of the imagination, but I was captured and inspired by the paddlers that I met when I first tried my hand at the sport. I was overcome with the sensation of fear, excitement and trepidation and this led to the idea behind this film.

My immortal soul and thanks to Simon Morse who is my shining star and guiding light in all things Canoe, and without whom this film would still be a crazy idea inside my crazy head.
Filmed in the Ystradfellte forest and Pen y Cae falls on the Afon Tawe in South Wales, and the Falls of Falloch on the River Falloch in Scotland. Continue reading
