Wasabi Power Battery for GoPro – Review

I have been trying out one of Wasabi’s GoPro batteries for the past few weeks. The standard GoPro battery is 3.7V and 1100mAh. The Wasabi battery is 3.7V and 1400mAh. So what does this actually mean, well in theory the Wasabi battery should last longer than the OEM GoPro battery!

This certainly seems to be the case. I have ran the camera using Video and time lapse over the past week using both the GoPro OEM battery and the Wasabi Power Battery. Repeatedly the Wasabi lasts a little bit longer than the GoPro.

The Wasabi Power Battery for GoPro costs way less than the GoPro OEM model. Every time I use my GoPro the SD card capacity has never been the limiting factor. The limiting factor has always been the battery life. I have therefore decided to order the Charger Kit which comes with two GoPro batteries.

GoPro Accessory Roll

I added a new bit of kit to my GoPro set up last weekend. I needed a system that could carry my extra GoPro kit safely in the boat but probably more importantly keeps my kit nicely organised. I don’t want to be rummaging in the bottom of a dry bag if I don’t have to. The accessory roll holds all of the bits and bobs that I need when out with my GoPro.

Accessory Roll

Two different prototypes have been made, with the main difference being the size/number of compartments. The roll shown below has been made with a ripstop Cordura so it’s really tough. It has separate compartments for –

A Phillips screwdriver
An aLOKSAK pouch containing my spare battery and SD cards. The pouch is completely waterproof.
A Gorilla-pod tripod
Assorted mounts including a new multifunctional mount that I am trying out for a new UK based firm.

The whole unit rolls up nice and tight and is fastened with a military spec fastek buckle.

Current GoPro Kit

GoPro” target=”_blank”>GoPro HD2 (bought as part of the Outdoor pack), but the Motorsport bundle offers a little more – GoPro Motorsports Hero 2. I have added a 2mm dyneema cord leash and a nice little mini S-biner.

GoPro Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery. Having this extra battery (plus additional SD cards) will really allow me to cover a full days worth of boating.

GoPro Suction Cup Mount. This arrived at the weekend and I plan to give this a bit of a test on the car and kayak over the next few weeks.

GoPro Floating Back Door. This has turned out to be a very useful accessory.

Joby Gorillapod. Great for attaching to fence posts, trees etc. You do need an adaptor to attach it to the GoPro.

GoPro Anti-Fog Inserts. Not 100% convinced about these but will be trying them out over the next few weeks.

Also in the photograph is my MYOG custom grip. Not in the photograph are my SD cards and a couple of custom made mounts from a new UK based firm (more info soon).

GoPro Floating Back Door

I bought a GoPro Floating Back Door a couple of weeks ago and this weekend it did its job.

It keeps the camera on the surface and is easy to spot. Job done!

I picked a good one!

After writing my post about SD/SDHC cards I decided to check out how fast my cards actually are. It turns out that my 32GB 7dayshop professional SDHC card is superb.

The Best GoPro Package for Kayaking?

As of 2012 what is the best GoPro package for kayaking? Over the past couple of years I have owned two GoPro cameras. The first was a 1080p hero and the second the HD2. In both cases I bought the helmet mount bundle (or the Outdoor Edition as it is now known) and although most of the mounts have been used I have never used the elastic headband mount.

The Best GoPro Package for Kayaking

Initially I had dismissed all of the other package/bundle options as I wanted to mount the camera on a helmet and the helmet mount pack seemed the logical one to go for. However, more recently I have been looking a little more closely at which bundle offers the best solution for the film making kayaker.

GoPro HD2 Surf Edition

GoPro HD Hero2 Surf Edition

Just over £200, includes the floaty back door as well!

GoPro HD Hero 2

Amazon have the Outdoor GoPro HD Hero 2 on at £255 and the Hero (1080p) at £179. The HD Hero Outdoor pack is the one I have had for a while now. The strap to attach the camera to a vented helmet is also really good for attaching to the front of a PFD.

GoPro Reference Guide for on the water

Not getting the correct settings on your GoPro for a particular shot or sequence is something that I find occurs quite a lot. Carrying the guide/manual around whilst paddling is also a bit of a nightmare. To try and solve this issue I have had a few stickers made up that show some of the key display codes from the GoPro. One of these is now stuck inside each of my boats.

GoPro Category

I’m getting so many requests and hits for posts that relate to using GoPro cameras that I have now added a new “GoPro” category and menu item.
