Jake Deakin: Conquering The Nile at 17

Uganda is somewhere I wanted to go as soon as I got into playboating but thought I would never have to skills to do so. I would watch videos and see pictures of these professional kayakers styling it and thinking “if only I was good enough to paddle that sort of water”.

It just goes to show if you want something enough and keep at it you will get there.

In summer 2012 me and my friend Jacob would talk about future trips on our to do list. Uganda came into the question, we did a bit of research on how easy it would be to organise a trip there in the winter. It all looked pretty simple considering this is Africa, but that’s often the view of an optimistic 17 year old. Continue reading

Moriston River Race 2013

This years Moriston River Race was held on the 26th of May.

The Big Dog Moriston River Race is Britain’s most extreme white water kayaking race. Named for the dam release river on which it is held this event brings kayakers from far and wide to enjoy one of Scotlands classic sections of white water. Its all about providing a quality arena in which kayakers can compete, a social atmosphere in which good company can be enjoyed and an event environment in which we can bring communities together.

River Tees – Racing Stretch

The stretch of the Tees from Egglestone to Cotherstone is known as the racing stretch due to its use as a ww racing venue. Access at Eggleston Bridge has been dodgy for some years so you are better off heading up stream to put on at Middleton. The outdoor centre at Middleton is a pefect place to get on it can found just outside of town on the road to High Force. As you leave town you’ll go over a stone bridge which has a tight left hand turn. As you head up the bank you’ll see some new houses on the left. the outdoor centre lies just beyond the houses. Don’t park in front of the house, just call into the outdoor centre and ask to leave your car. 9 times out of 10 it will be OK. A short 200m walk down a narrow footpath takes you right down to the river. Alternatively park in town and walk down to the river.
