Norway Day 14 – The Brandseth Race

Today was the Brandseth Race which saw some big names gearing up to fight for the top prize. The racecourse section is tight and technical and with low water levels the fast lines became smaller and harder to make.

The final was close but in the end Sam Sutton came in 1st and notably Joe Morley smashed it and came 5th. In the ladies category Sandra missed out on 1st place but finished second winning herself a nice amount of money.

The rest of us chilled out by the river for the day and later got a nice paddle in on the Ruandal play sections.

Here’s some pictures from the day:

MTB Essentials

If you are new to MTB then it isn’t always easy to know what gear to take, what works well, what is essential and what you can go without. Gear is very much a personal thing, what to one person is an essential may seem like to another a needless luxury. Carrying the right kit when out on ride can prevent a small mechanical problem turning into a 3 hour epic. Carry too much and your ride becomes a kit hauling nightmare. Obviously you will need to tailor what you carry to the envrionment your riding in and the length/duration of the ride.

Northern Routes – Brake Bleeding

For a short while Unsponsored had a rival on my PC, a small site that centred around providing GPS routes of mountain bike routes. The Mountain Bike mags didn’t like it much and it took a huge amount of effort to keep it going. SO dispite the support it faded away. Anyway this post is the 900th on Unsponsored and provides a little showcase of the type of stuff that was on my other site – Northernroutes.

If your brakes don’t work properly you are going to end up stacked in some ditch or tree. Maintianing your brakes is crucial for your own safety. On hydraulic brakes when you pull the lever the brake fluid is pushed and compressed through the brake line and pushes the pistons/brakepads against the brake disc. However if your brake fluid contains air then it is that which is compressed first and hence you can’t brake as well.

Guidebooks

With the widespread use of the net, smartphones and the like I still firmly believe that there is a need for good quality paper based guidebooks.

Some may think that this strange coming from someone who uses the net a great deal and runs a website. But in reality when you are in the wilds, batteries die and paper is a safe bet. Some of my favourite guidebooks are the following. Continue reading

Freestyle Competitions Back In The Day – Scores On The Doors

Back in March 2002 these were the scores set by International Freestyle Committee for freestyle competitions. The first number denotes the points awarded for each move. How things have changed!

0.1 Back surf (2 second minimum) – Competitor maintains a backward position with body facing completely downstream.

0.1 Flat spin (counts one way only) – 360 degree rotation of boat at a 0-45 degree angle. Continue reading

Moriston River Race 2013

This years Moriston River Race was held on the 26th of May.

The Big Dog Moriston River Race is Britain’s most extreme white water kayaking race. Named for the dam release river on which it is held this event brings kayakers from far and wide to enjoy one of Scotlands classic sections of white water. Its all about providing a quality arena in which kayakers can compete, a social atmosphere in which good company can be enjoyed and an event environment in which we can bring communities together.
