Enjoyed a bit of non-kayaking action today in the form of the Stockton Cycling Festival. We didn’t have to travel very far (5m from the Sofa) to get right in front of the action.
I have had at least one version of the Immersion Research Comp Cag in my kit bag for longer than I care to remember.
This is the 2012 edition of the most comprehensive guidebook to canoeing and kayaking the rivers of Wales. Nearly all the rivers of the principality are covered, mostly from navigable source to sea or confluence. From lazy gentle tours suitable for families, to raging torrents and waterfalls. There are over 180 rivers and two thousand kilometres of paddling. The book is simple to navigate with quick reference information, detailed descriptions and area maps of the river catchments. There are a great many more colour photographs in this new edition compared with the old. There’s also an eclectic mix of anecdotes for a perspective on the paddling scene in Wales, past and present – but the best tales, yet to be told, are left for you to discover on the Welsh rivers. This is completely revised and updated since reprints of the first edition in 2003 and 2006. It has not been available since 2008 and there is no competitor or comparable book since the first edition.

The Allen is a classic ww run in the NE of England and is a tributary of the River South Tyne. It lies just west of the market town of Hexham. The Allen is a short run from Cupola Bridge on the A686 to Alston. However it also provides a number of interesting park and play spots when in medium to high water levels. Continue reading

A tape knot is pretty much the only knot to use with lengths of climbing tape to form a loop/sling. Any other knot is prone to more slippage than the tape knot. Dyneema tape should only ever be stitched and should not be knotted.
Start off by tying an overhand knot in one end of the tape. Just make sure that there isn’t any twists in the tape. It’s also good practice to have plenty of spare tape at the free end of the knot to account for any possible slippage. I like to have 10-15cm spare.
