As of 2012 what is the best GoPro package for kayaking? Over the past couple of years I have owned two GoPro cameras. The first was a 1080p hero and the second the HD2. In both cases I bought the helmet mount bundle (or the Outdoor Edition as it is now known) and although most of the mounts have been used I have never used the elastic headband mount.
Initially I had dismissed all of the other package/bundle options as I wanted to mount the camera on a helmet and the helmet mount pack seemed the logical one to go for. However, more recently I have been looking a little more closely at which bundle offers the best solution for the film making kayaker.
I have concluded that the current GoPro Motorsports Hero 2 Action Camera probably fits the bill.
The camera comes supplied with all the standard mounts that you would need to attach your GoPro to your kayak/canoe helmet, but also includes the front helmet mount if you would prefer to keep the camera a little bit more out of harms way during a capsize. This mount also allows you to rig up a camera angle that points back towards the paddler.
But probably the most interesting part of the pack which I hadn’t previously considered is the suction cup mount. This has primarily been design to attach the camera to the glass or body work of a motor vehicle. I really like the shots in kayak videos of paddlers on the journey to water. This would be a perfect bit of kit for that kind of filming. To buy separately the mount would cost way over £25. On reflection I would get a great deal more use out of this mount than the elastic head band mount I received as part of my Outdoor Edition bundle.
