Sweet Rocker

I have been using a Sweet Strutter on and off for the past 10 years. The Strutter is a M/L and fits great and I have on occasion tried on M/L Rockers when in a kayak store but have always found them a little bit too snug. Last year I tried on the new “plastic” Rocker in L/XL and bought it. The best helmet will always be the one that offers you the best protection and fit.

The new Rocker is made from a plastic outer with carbon fibre re-enforment at key points. The padding is similar to that found in bicycle helmets and is covered with a lightly padded fabric cover. Self adhesive shims are supplied with the rocker so you can customise the fit. Continue reading

Wavesport Diesel

I must admit that I have largely ignored the Wavesport Diesel over the years. It hasn’t really been a boat that has made it onto my radar. Over the last few months this has changed as I have seen more and more Diesels on the water and have had an opportunity to try one out.

Wavesport Diesel

The Diesel from Wavesport has been around for some time but it has had a major design change over the years. The Diesel 65, 75 and 85 are generation I and the 70, 80 and 90 are generation II. Gen I models are still available but are marketed as the D65 and D75.

Surfers Ear – Exostosis

When the ear is exposed to water and cold wind over a period of time the ear canal can narrow due to bone growth, this can lead to deafness or serious infection. The only solution to the problem is surgery. I know a couple of paddlers who have had this surgery and it is not pleasant.

Many kayakers are now aware of “surfers ear” and have started to wear neoprene skullcaps to protect the ears, however surfers have found that wearing skullcaps doesn’t always prevent surfers ear. Continue reading

I’ve waited a while for this one and I’m really please that Sam has taken the time to take part in the Unsponsored 2013 Q&A series. I’ve known Sam for many many years, I reckon 12 years +.

Sam has consistently and quite quietly been out charging some of the biggest whitewater around the globe and hunting down some first descents closer to home. Sam is simply a superb paddler and it’s been great to have the opportunity to paddle with him over the years. Keep on charging!

Tell us a little a bit about you accomplishments in the canoeing/kayaking world.

My accomplishments, I got “most improved paddler award” at my old canoe club one year when I was 13ish which I was well proud of!! Been on GB freestyle team for a few years competed in a World Champs and some European champs, a few first d’s. Paddled some of the most amazing whitewater on the planet with some great friends.

Falls of Lora

Unsponsored’s little brother River was at the Falls of Lora (Scotland) last week for some awesome surfing on this tidal race.

The falls are generated when the tide level in the Firth of Lorn drops below the level of the water in Loch Etive.

Paddle Plugs – I’m Plugged Are You?

Today I had impressions of my ears taken for a set of Paddleplugs. Paddleplugs are ear plugs that are custom made based upon the shape of your ear and ear canal.

The process is fairly quick and painless. My set of plugs will be made up over the next few days.
