Here’s a run down of a few of the things that kayakers, canoeists and SUP paddlers may like as a pressie from Father Christmas. I’m assuming that a Wavesport Recon and other large bits of kit are already on the list! Continue reading

Basic map and compass skills are often overlooked by paddlers but are essential if you’re hunting down the next stout or need to walk out from a river. Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology has changed many aspects of navigation. This doesn’t negate the need for a basic understanding of map/compass use. Batteries don’t last forever and you just know that if you’re in a tight spot your GPS is bound to breakdown! However that said if you need to pin point your position in bad weather (or otherwise) a GPS will do it damn quick.
The Theory
Maps are essentially a 2D representation of a 3D world. Maps contain a huge range of information that can on first glance look very intimidating. But given some time and very little effort you can unlock that information and begin to use maps to your advantage.
Continue readingSince the re-launch of Unsponsored I have uploaded 500 posts to the site (this is #500).
It’s been great to see the enthusiasm for the site grow in both myself and in all of the visitors out there. Ten of thousands of unique visitors stop by the site on a daily basis and that figure is growing month by month. THANKYOU!
There are a number of developments in the pipeline over the next few weeks and into the New Year. I have some kit about to land very shortly including a Contour Roam, plus a pile of other on/off the water kit. A number of long term review updates are well over due and the 2013 Q&A Series will be starting 2013 with a bang.
Thanks Again and Stay Safe.

Channel Surfing
Surfing from channel to channel until they passed even Channel No 5, these action heros take the viewer on a whirlwind tour of insane stunts and unbelievable masquerades. Action sequences include surfing Montreal’s massive Mavric wave, hair boating in California and the Southeast as well as an insane freewheel off a huge waterfall.
I’m having a clear out of the kite store. More info –
Some times you need a bit of cord for a quick repair or even strapping down boats in an emergency. Carrying a hank of cord is not the most practical solution for carrying some “just in case kit”, but a Survival Bracelet is!
My survival bracelet uses US military approved 500 paracord to provide around 7ft of survival cord. The cord itself is 550lb breaking strain paracord. This is made by a Certified US Government Contractor, it is 550lb test line with a 7 strand core. 100% nylon and made in the USA.
Rounding up this years Unsponsored Q&A series is Shon Bollock. Shon is a whitewater kayaker and filmmaker from Mt. Shasta California. He has been on the water since he was 2 months old and is the owner of Shasta Boyz Productions. The chances are you have seen Shon in action in one of the many GoPro videos on Vimeo or Youtube. Enjoy!
This a Spyderco Tasman Salt. The blade is a rust resistant H1 steel. This knife has now found a new home in my PFD. A review will follow shortly.
My GoPro Hero 3 Black edition arrived this week. The form factor is identical to that of the Silver Edition I already have, as it’s the internals that are different.
One of the new GoPro “The Frame” mounts landed yesterday.
The mount is designed to house the new GoPro Hero 3 series (white, silver, and black). The images below show the mount being used with a Silver series HD3. Continue reading
