The Altai mountains are located in South Siberia. It is the best region in Russia for whitewater kayaking. You’ve probably seen some epic videos about this place. From classic “Glorious way to die” to modern “Book of legends” by Adidas Sickline team; and probably already heard about such iconic brands of Altai as Bashkaus river, Mazhoy Gorge, King of Asia race.
Altai has all you need for perfect kayak trip: wide variety of rivers, ultimate beauty of nature, safe and friendly environment. But this place needs one more thing to become new whitewater Mecca – a proper river guidebook.
After over 20 years (only a year or so more than this site), Boatertalk will cease to exist in 2018. Unfortunately the emergence of Facebook and the like has meant that many forums have disappeared, including our own. BT was a great inspiration in the early days of Unsponsored and I wish Eric all the best with his next venture.
I have met a lot of amazing people and I have made more than a handful of great friends. It was nice to be able to support the community in a way that kept them connected and engaged. BoaterTalk will always be something I am proud of. In these days of multiple social media choices, BoaterTalk is not what it was. There are bigger and better places out there to connect, ones whose scale and resources I simply cannot compete with. Because of that, it’s time for me to move on to what is next. I will be shutting down BoaterTalk in the new year. It’s been an honor. Thank you.

This year Yak Adventure Equipment distributed thousands of orange Popsicle Yaks to the paddling community, with the aim of capturing as many images as possible of Yak out on his adventures. The winners have now been announced with the most adventurous Yak out there receiving £500 worth of Yak gear!
In addition, for the Yak addict who had collected both blue and green Yaks from the previous #WheresYakAt competitions as well as this year’s orange Yak, the #WheresYakAtTripleUp challenge also ran!

A great deal of outdoor equipment passes through the halls of Unsponsored HQ. Some great, some good and some not so good. As we get closer to the 25th of December it has now become a little bit of tradition (and to save me answering loads of “What should I get ….. for Christmas, they have just got into kayaking/canoeing/SUP?” type questions via email) to put together a list of gear for our Festive Gift Guide that paddlers and general outdoors type folk might appreciate as presents at Christmas time.

Getting your kayak onto the plane is one of the hardest and worst experiences you will ever have with your kayak. I typically take over 10 flights a year where I have to fly with my kayak, lot’s of times with airlines that fully disclose that they do not take kayaks.
There’s something incredibly humbling about having a bad swim. Yes there’s the realizing the river’s the boss, however much control you think you are in – but more in recognizing the support from those paddlers around you – some of whom you may not have even met before.
This Saturday I took a dip on the Spillimacheen River in BC. It happens – I was due one, it’s been a couple of years. But this one was different. I’ve had other bad swims over the years, but with those, although I’ve had other paddlers around, I’ve played a part in my rescue. With this one, apart from the single act of keeping concious/breathing there was very little I could do.

When you meet Horst Hattinger, you can see the fire in his eyes, the way he talks about life, about adventure, is his way of riding the lightning. English is not his first language, not that this matters – the themes cross language, cross the boundaries of borders. I have tided his written English just a little,but have kept the essence alive. It seems to me that both kayaking and canoeing as a competitive sport contributes highly to the the success of Team GB as a whole. Whether it is slalom, downriver racing, polo or freestyle the UK are right up there as one of the big hitters year in and year out. Yet funding to get UK team members out to freestyle competitions to represent our country is lacking.
