Surprise, Surprise – GoPro Hero 3 Plus Black Edition

Although the GoPro Hero 3 plus black edition system excels at recoding video footage it can also take some pretty good still shots. I often like to set the GoPro Hero 3 plus black edition to take still images every 30 seconds to see what it comes out with.

Now and again my GoPro really surprises me. The shot above was taken using standard settings in low light. I quite like it!

The GoPro was set up on the bow of a Wavesport Recon using a standard sticky mount. A tether was used to keep the GoPro Hero 3 plus black edition safe in the event the mount failed. The camera was set up facing the paddler.

SAS Hurley Classic 2013

Not a competition for well trained elite UK special force units, but a great freestyle/boater X comp held here in UK for all to enter.

Three Waves Nose Plugs/Clips

I’ve been using Smiley nose plugs for longer than I care to remember and have never moved away from them. I am a firm believer in the use of nose plugs and each of my helmets has (had) a Smiley nose plug attached and they have served me well. However that may have just changed with the arrival of these new nose plugs from Three Waves.

A couple of weeks ago I was kindly sent a pair of ThreeWaves nose clips from Germany.

The Racers: Where, What, and Why

The Racers: Where, What, and Why from Kayak TV (Kayak Session Mag) on Vimeo.

In this video I chatted with a bunch of racers about where they are from, why they race, and what worries them the most about race day.
Shane Benedict is a whitewater legends, green river veteran, co owner of liquid logic kayaks (liquidlogickayaks.com), and a great friend of kayak session!

Wavesport Mobius And New Pyranha Burn – A Closer Look

The Pyranha Burn shown here is a final prototype and has all the features and fitting of the production boat.

As you can see the new Pyranha design looks more like a river runner than the last model. The lines are long, edges more continuous and the boat overall appears to have a much longer waterline.

From Where?

I always find it interesting how/why folk end up visiting Unsponsored.

This link and description from Sheffield Uni caught my eye. I love it for a number of reasons.

Secret Paddler – Tyne Tour

After a great response on Facebook this one is a goer.

Screen Shot 2013-10-25 at 17.33.33

I’m planning a ‘secret paddler’ attack for the Tyne Tour here in the UK. Here is how it works. I will have an Unsponsored minion (as many of you know me by sight) somewhere out and about for each day on the water or on the bank. If he/she spots a paddler with a new Team Unsponsored sticker on their kit and likes the cut of his/her jib then they get a dry bag stuffed with some Unsponsored goodies.

New stickers will be available Monday. Send me an email if you want any – phil ATTTTT unsponsored.co.uk and I’ll get em out 1st class Monday.

Unsponsored Q&A Series – Martina Wegman

We have had a little bit of a summer break with Q&A series but I’m pleased to announce that the series is back and we kick off with a Q&A with one of the most talented female paddlers on the planet – Martina Wegman.

Martina is arguably one of the most talented female kayakers in the world and is constantly pushing the limits of what is possible in a kayak. I am therefore stoked that Martina agreed to take part in the Unsponsored Q&A series.

Flush Drowning

Lots to think about from this one.

Flush drowning – have you heard about it?

Flush drowning is where the victim is not held in place, but is rather denied air by rough water or being held underwater by the force of water itself.

More info here.
