GoPro Wifi App

The long awaited App for the GoPro Wifi Bac is now avilable on iTunes. The App is free but requires you to have a GoPro Hero 2 and Wifi Bacpac kit or a Hero 3 (Wifi is built in). A firmware update is required before you attempt to connect the App.

With the GoPro App you can now control your GoPro camera remotely using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Features include: full control of all camera settings; live, remote viewfinder/preview of your iPhone/iPod or iPad for easy shot framing, and more.

In my case I have connected my iPhone to the camera so will refer to iPhone throughout this write up with the understanding that other iOS devices can be connected.

To connect the iPhone to the GoPro I switched on the GoPro/Bacpac and navigated to the Wifi settings on the camera menu and selected the Phone/Tablet option. On my iPhone I went to settings, switched on the Wifi and connected to the GoPro Wifi network. A password is requested. The default password is “goprohero”.

GoPro Leash

I usually wear my GoPro attached to my Sweet Strutter helmet. The curvature of the helmet doesn’t quite match the profile of the curved GoPro mount. So although the mount is secure there is a pretty good chance that a hit will knock it clean off. I have therefore installed a leash system.

There are a number of arguments for and against attaching the camera with a leash. Most of the against centre around the risk of snagging. At the end of the day I have thought carefully about the pros and cons and have decided that I will use a leash.

Peli 1120 & GoPro Kit

I have had a Peli 1120 case sitting around for a short while. I have been meaning to get it kitted out to hold a small selection of my GoPro kit.

GoPro Accessory Roll

I added a new bit of kit to my GoPro set up last weekend. I needed a system that could carry my extra GoPro kit safely in the boat but probably more importantly keeps my kit nicely organised. I don’t want to be rummaging in the bottom of a dry bag if I don’t have to. The accessory roll holds all of the bits and bobs that I need when out with my GoPro.

Accessory Roll

Two different prototypes have been made, with the main difference being the size/number of compartments. The roll shown below has been made with a ripstop Cordura so it’s really tough. It has separate compartments for –

A Phillips screwdriver
An aLOKSAK pouch containing my spare battery and SD cards. The pouch is completely waterproof.
A Gorilla-pod tripod
Assorted mounts including a new multifunctional mount that I am trying out for a new UK based firm.

The whole unit rolls up nice and tight and is fastened with a military spec fastek buckle.

Cauldron Snout – The Stout of the Snout

The Stout of the Snout

Sam Ellis styles it down Cauldrons Snout. A class V+ stretch of whitewater on the River Tees (UK).

Sam Ellis running the Cauldron Snout on the River Tees. You can count on one hand how many times this section has been successfully run. But this is the first time it has been ran with a substantial amount of water. The river was at approximately 0.7 on the nearest river level gauge.

Cauldron Snout is 180m long and is recognised as Englands longest waterfall which looses 61m giving it a gradient of 34 percent. Sit back watch and enjoy!

Paddling in Ecuador – Part III

Paddling in Ecuador - Part III

7th Jan

Nath took a chill as he wasnt feeling good, I safety boated the Jatunyacu with Diego and Armin, Armin rocked up without a helmet but cracked on anyway as it was deep. Diego left me with the raft and gear to sort. I wish I had a photo of the put in which was basically a stream bed at 45 degrees, I had to move the 12ft raft down it on my own which was class given the amount of rum I had drunk the night before. I also learnt a valuable lesson, don’t trust a fart in Ecuador, enough said. It rained so hard that all the customers went blue and we had no spare gear, Diego found some matches at the lunch spot and made a fire which was a welcome site for everyone. We headed down and pulled in at a side canyon where everyone got brown war paint or mud.

Go Pro HD – Boat Mount

The Go Pro camera (or at least the mount) has definitely become the must have accessory for kayaking/canoeing helmets. You can find loads of videos on both Youtube and Vimeo showing footage shot from a helmet mount. So from time to time it’s quite nice to see shots from a different angle, such as in the image shown below.

The image is a screen grab from some footage taken on a Go Pro HD mounted to a homebrew kayak mount created by my good friend Mr Phil Higgins.

Teesside today – Low/High water flow

This video was taken today with low water and high water flow. The low water flow was similar to around 7-8 cumecs on the old course, two screws were working at this point.
