Are you passionate about protecting our waterways and seas? Islander Kayaks and Odyssey Innovation are giving away a recycled kayak every month to groups and individuals with projects that take action in the fight against marine waste, rubbish and pollution.
In 2018, together with their partner Odyssey Innovation, Islander created the world’s first kayaks moulded using plastic collected from beach cleans and salvaged marine industry waste that Odyssey founder Rob Thompson developed.

Had crazy levels and a flashflood in less than 24 hours, crazy to experience that and see how quickly things can change on the river. Looking forward to exploring the country more over the next few weeks! Big thanks to Eddiline kayak club for help with safety and logistics!

There’s been an accident and you need the help of the emergency services: Who do you call? What do you ask for? What information will you give? Based on a recent incident in the UK, here’s some learning (that I hope you’ll never have to put into practice)!
This is the very bare bones of calling for help and is not a substitute for completing a relevant first aid course, a safety and rescue course or undertaking leadership training and assessment. Every emergency is unique, but these simple steps should help you to get the help you need as efficiently as possible.

Continue readingContinue readingThis powerful film odyssey across America explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing aware- ness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. Dam removal has moved beyond the fictional Monkey Wrench Gang to go mainstream. Where obsolete dams come down, rivers bound back to life, giving salmon and other wild fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds, after decades without access. DamNation’s majestic cinematography and unexpected discoveries move through rivers and landscapes altered by dams, but also through a metamorphosis in values, from conquest of the natural world to knowing ourselves as part of nature.

The HF Weasel is HF’s smallest and most compact throw bag with a decent length of line. If space within your boat is at a premium then this bag may be the one for you. The Weasel fits even in the smallest kayak or can be fixed and carried on a waist belt (HF Swifty Belt).
If a throw bag is needed in a emergency you probably won’t have any time for a second go! Therefore the most important factors when using a throwbag is how well it throws, and how easy it is to get the bag to land on target. In both cases the HF Weasel fits the bill. I found the bag easy to throw both under and over arm. The rope pays out nicely during a throw and is also easy to repack if you do need (or have time) to have a second go.
The Weasel has been available for a number of years in both red and black. For 2020 we have a new colour option.

It was incredible filled with cultural experiences and some epic first descent waterfalls.

Continue readingLiving in Fort William as a kayaker means one thing – a good, comfy and durable dry suit is a must! Lochaber has rain even in the driest months. In fact, we have an average annual rainfall of approximately 1777mm or 70 inches; a kayakers paradise. However, for those of us who feel the cold, a mean annual temperature of only 8.6 °C can be a enthusiasm-killer if you’re body isn’t guaranteed to be warm and dry whilst paddling, even in the summer months when you’re catching post-work Moriston laps until 10pm.
