GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition Vs Hero 3+ Black Edition

[UPDATE: GoPro have released the Hero6 black edition, find out more here.]

The GoPro Hero 3 plus arrives just 12 months on from the release of the GoPro Hero 3 Black series. The camera comes supplied in the standard GoPro packaging. Included in the package is the camera, wifi remote, USB leads for both the camera and remote, a skeleton back door and a couple of sticky mounts (one curved, one flat). As thought the form factor of the actual camera remains the same. The Hero 3 will fit in the Hero 3+ case and vice versa. Visibly there is little difference between the cameras, although you can tell that the lens is different.

The biggest physical change is in the case. It is much smaller with a lower profile clasp. It doesn’t have the lock like the previous case but the clasp is quite low profile and looks as if it would be difficult to knock or catch. I have found that the clasp is pretty tough and can be difficult to release. I suspect there will be knack to getting it done, but I am actually reassured by the fact that it doesn’t just pop off.

The changes in the case make the whole unit much lighter. The lens area is much smaller and is fastened to the case from the inside rather than from the exterior. This means that changing the panel will be possible if it were to get scratched or damaged in any other way.

GoPro Hero 3 Plus Battery Performance

One of the biggest changes with the Hero3+ is a more powerful battery and some inner tweaks that allow the camera to run for longer. GoPro reckon that the Hero3+ has
a 30% longer battery life compared to HERO3: Black Edition with its new battery rated at 1180mAH, 3.7V, 4366mWh.

The chart below indicates the approximate continuous recording time (hr:min) you can expect when shooting in various video modes using a fully-charged battery. So far, in pretty mild conditions and using a 16GB Samsung Micro SD Card I have found the findings below to be fairly accurate.

GoPro Hero 3 And 3 Plus Micro SD Card

One of the biggest areas that is overlooked when getting a video/camera setup for trips out is the speed of the your SD card. Many ask what is the best SD card for my GoPro camera? The GoPro HD Hero3 and 3 Plus series of cameras support Micro SD cards up to 64GB.

The choices of GoPro Hero 3 And 3 Plus micro SD cards is huge. Hopefully my trial and error over the last few years will point you in the right direction.

I have updated this post to ensure that the best cards possible are identified. This post also now contains references to the Hero 4 range of cameras.

The GoPro Hero 3 – white, silver, black and the even newer newer GoPro 3+ range use Micro SD Cards. Micro SD cards are roughly the size of a mobile phone sim card and are often supplied with an adaptor to allow them to be used within tech that uses full size SD cards.

GoPro Battery Alternatives

I’ve been using both the OEM GoPro and Wasabi batteries in my GoPro 3 with great success. However this triple pack (at under £15) from Duragadget are also doing really well. Reviews from across the net are confirming my findings that they are definitely up to the job and are superb value.

I also have a GoPro battery BacPac in for test, to date this is working really well. I don’t like the additional weight when wearing the unit on my helmet, but when it’s on the boat or tripod it is spot on.

The Drift TimeLapse allows you to capture photo TimeLapse sequences and is enabled to rotate 360° in 60 minutes. This system allows you to create those really clever panning TimeLapse clips within your movies.

Mount Star GoPro Mounts

Using a GoPro can mean that your camera angles are pretty much the same – from the helmet or from your boat. Sometimes the best shots are those that rely on the camera being on the bank, on a bridge or on a paddle. But at the same time you don’t want to be hauling a great pile of kit that takes ages to set up. In my boat a carry a small GoPro roll bag that contains a few bits and bobs for my GoPro while I am on the river. This includes spare cards, battery and a gorilla pod. Small tripods are super useful but you need a way of attaching your GoPro camera to them.
