TV2 Norway – Kayaking Accident Story

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 13.07.54

In July 2014 Josh Neilson was kayaking with friends in Norway near Sjoa. After 5 of his crew paddled ‘Matzes Drop’ it was his turn. After a good entry the nose of his kayak was thrust into the air and caused him to fly through the air and land at the bottom in an undesirable way. At the moment of impact he broke his back and had to be flown to Lillehammer hospital and then on to Elverum for surgery. One year of rehab later and he returns to Voss in Norway for Ekstremsportveko and to go kayaking. This is the story by TV2 on his accident and return to kayaking.

Brokeback Gorge

Brokeback Gorge

Knowing that much of the NY’s First D potential has yet to be tapped, Eric Adsit has been feverishly studying his local topography looking for the next best thing. He began his research in his own back yard, the foothills of the Adirondacks and came up huge with this beauty. With only a handful of descents, chances are, you’ve already driven past the take out without even noticing.

Boater Boof

Boater Boof

I have seen the Boater Boof technique used a number of times over the years and each case the boater who has boofed has came out of the situation quite well. For the guy stuck in the hole the outcome has always been a swim.

What would you do in this situation?

Northern Territory Series – River Tees

In April 2009 Nathan Butler and Martyn Sollars embarked on journey across the United Stated of America. Nathan invested in the ‘Whitewater Classics: Fifty North American Rivers’. This book became the bible, a tick list by default – It featured handpicked paddlers sharing their experiences of each river and stating why it is a classic.

Northern Territory Series - River Tees

The book was by no means a guidebook, but suggestions made by accomplished and proven pioneers of the sport. Contributors to the Northern Territory project haven’t got the reputation or world titles as featured in ‘Whitewater Classics: Fifty North American Rivers’, but do share the same desire and passion for the sport.

Over the next few weeks Unsponsored will be sharing Nathan’s thoughts and comments on some of the many whitewater classics in Northern Britain.

From Nathan:

Although this UK Northern Territory series doesn’t cover the vast range of rivers the ‘Whitewater Classics: Fifty North American Rivers’ edition does I hope it details those that are worthy of exposure, a mixture of known classics and lesser known sections of whitewater that are carefully selected as not to dilute an abundance of excellent whitewater found in Northern Britain. We hope this works best and gives you the same excitement and is as helpful and as fun to experience as it was for us to produce.

Enjoy and Happy Hucking!

Chaos Theory – Free Will

Check out the first in a series of films from Mike McKay.

Free Will

What role does silence have in all this noise?

In order to fully experience the chaos of the waterfall the paddler must push away the noise in his head and surrounding him. Zen is experienced in the complete isolation and embrace of the river’s power.

Like A Girl

This is a great edit from the team at Tits Deep.

Like A Girl

Four years ago, I was inspired by a group of women to become more involved with whitewater kayaking. It made me realize what I was missing in life, and when I had the chance to take an independent study my senior year, I jumped on it. Working with a semester-long project, I decided I wanted to encompass a lot of women, kayaking, and showing power. I wanted to be able to share the feeling I had four years ago with others.

Kayak Probe Middle Palguin

Kayak Probe Middle Palguin

The Middle Palguin class V waterfall near Pucon Chile was arguably one of the most cherished cascade features in the kayaking world. During 2014 heavy flooding milled porous basalt below the cascade formerly known as Stout 10. Tons of bedrock literally collapsed out from under Stout 10 just above the kayaker destination Middle Palguin 70 footer. Now, kayakers consistently ask, “What’s at the bottom?” “Can you send a probe kayak?” “Is it runnable?” A little known study abroad program for kayakers decided to kayak probe the cave siphon drop and document the mission for a video production course.

Falls Of Falloch – Broken Back

A few weeks ago myself and a group of friends were kayaking in Scotland on our annual easter trip with Salford University. We were having a great time, kayaking some really beautiful Scottish white water.

On Easter Sunday we hatched an ambitious plan to hit 4 runs in one day and make the most of the water levels before they dropped because of sunshine. The first order of business was a 30 foot waterfall near Loch Lomond in Stirling called the Falls of Falloch. This waterfall is famous with kayakers as being a very friendly waterfall to run and practice on.

Falls Of Falloch – Broken Back

After checking it out we were all happy and we got kitted up and psyched up for what would have been the biggest drop any of us would have done. My friend dropped the falls first and did it perfectly, after seeing him do it I geared up to paddle this beautiful drop. I hit the line and tucked for the impact at the bottom, unfortunately once I plunged into the pool at the bottom I knew immediately something was wrong. My landing was slightly horizontal, my back was in agony and I couldnt move.
