Astral Brewer Shoe 2.0 – Review

We have had at least one pair of Astral Brewers at Unsponsored HQ since there launch back in around 2013.

Astral Brewer Shoe 2.0 – Review

In that time I think we have had three pairs, so it is about time we published a full review.

Zamora

Zamora
Zamora

Eddied out in a remote Ecuadorian village, politics and local beliefs force a group of kayakers to desert their hopes of a first descent on the Rio Mulatos and Rio Coangos. Unwilling to simply go home, Team NRS paddlers Todd Wells and Galen Volckhausen set their sights on the Rio Zamora instead. ZAMORA is a story about cultural barriers, personality barriers and physical barriers between paddlers and kayaking expeditions. And it offers a rare look into the gritty aspects of a first descent and what happens when plans fall through.

Boof, Boof, Paddle, Boof, Then Boof Again

Boof, Boof, Paddle, Boof, Then Boof Again

Pretty sure this run is called the Little White of Quebec, and it’s not hard to see why. This section actually blew my mind a little since I couldn’t believe I had never done it before. It had a seemingly endless amount of Boofs with a few stouter rapids in there. Definitely a section worth hitting, but it’s made even better if you can get your beta from Billy Thibault.

Palm Side Swing HMS Karabiner – First Look

The Palm Side swing HMS Karabiner looks like a fairly conventional karabiner that has had some weight shaved off and a trick anodised colour applied. I thought exactly this when it landed here at Unsponsored HQ.

I didn’t even look at the name, as it was obscured by the paperwork, before removing the karabiner from its display card and checking out the gate action.

When you pick up a karabiner it is compulsory to test out the gate action. That is the point that I realised the Palm side swing karabiner was a little bit different.

Ottilie Robinson-Shaw Joins The C1 Conversions Team

I’m pleased to welcome Ottilie Robinson-Shaw to The C1 Kayak Conversions Team. For those who don’t know Ottie, Ottie is a World Champion kayaker. She is 2019 and 2017 ICF Freestyle World Champion, 2018 European Champion and ICF Double World Champion, 4 times British Champion, and has the record for the highest ever score on ICF competition. We’re hoping that Womens C1 is about to be introduced to World Freestyle Competition, and I’m excited that I can be part of Ottie’s transition into C1 Freestyle. Ottie feels confident in taking the top team spot and is a likely favourite to medal.

I look forward to working with Ottie and inspiring more girls into the sport.

Big Water Combat Rolls On The New River Gorge

This Week on Kayak Support, we headed back to West Virginia and paddled the New River Gorge! We had an epic day working our way down the massive, pool-drop rapids, surfing, and of course, getting flipped! In this episode, we talk through what I learned about combat rolls in big water and show you some of my lines down this all-time classic river! YEW!
