Over the last few months we’ve had a fair bit of near gear at Unsponsored HQ lined up for testing. One of the hottest pieces of gear this summer has been the VE Explorer Aircore Pro Carbon Bladed paddles.
I had two sets of these paddles to test with different blade areas. These can be seen in the lower part of the image with a whitewater set at the top for comparison.
Some fun footage of FeatherWeight boats and crew ripping. The Feather – we designed this boat to carve hard, go big and be the most fun you have ever had in a kayak I talked with some of the best boaters in the world to find out what people wanted in a new boat. The Step Chine is a new advancement in kayak tech, borrowing from powerboat designs giving a raised rail that only engages when needed. Its a loose comfortable fit for me at 6′ size 11 with thick booties on. These boats last for years being almost infinitely repairable, making them cheaper and greener long term than plastic. That and ten times more fun, carbon boats aren’t just for pros.
For a number of years I have managed perfectly without the need of a tripod for my camera work. I say managed as I never really had seen a need for a tripod when my arms work just fine. However after trying a number of tripods and settling on the Giottos Vitruvian I can now appreciate that a tripod has a home within my kayaking camera kit.
I wanted a system that was light, could handle getting wet and would be a sound investment. After much reading I settled on the Giottos Vitruvian carbon tripod with the MH5400 head and MH652 quick release plate.

The GoPro 4 POV action camera appears in a number of different guises including the Session, Silver edition (with built in LCD screen) and the industry leading 4K capable Black edition. No matter which GoPro you choose you need the best Micro SD card possible. At the end of the day it isn’t all about size, it’s all about speed.
The Hero 4 (including the Session), 3+ and 3 series will accept Micro SD cards up to a 64GB capacity. The new grey Hero camera will accept a card with a capacity up to 32GB.
Adventure Technology (AT) have always been known amongst whitewater kayakers for producing some of the best paddles that money can buy (the Elite Series). Unfortunately for many paddlers, the budget often doesn’t quite stretch far enough and we find ourselves opting for the cheaper and somewhat inferior options.
Europe Team Manager Mathieu Dumoulin walks us through the new Carbon Rock Star build by Gui Gui Prod.
Hastings gives us a look at some of the new blade shapes and designs coming in the AT Paddles lineup but also lets us in on a new technology that will help ensure you never find yourself up a creek (with a broken paddle).
Well here it is in the flesh and in the UK.
